Re: Greatest admiral of all time

I think that Frank Jack Fletcher did a pretty good job in the year-plus he was in combat - won at Coral Sea, won at Midway, won at Santa Cruz. Of course, the Marines bitch about him and Morrison was left peeved that Fletcher had better things to do than help him write his books, but his record is th...

Most likely outcome? A badly beat-up Yamato gets scuppered by aircraft the next day.

Re: Yamato Instead of Kirishima 13th Nov 1942

What would've happened if it was Yamato there instead of Kirishima? My guess would be... about the same thing, except that Yamato might have survived. She would have made a bigger hole in SD with her one (?) main battery hit, requiring more repair time. Yamato, soaking up ten or so 16" shells,...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

A 16" gun with 2700 pound shell seems about ideal, for a battleship gun. Bigger is better.

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Gentlemen, I believe that the hit on the Bow from PoW went straight through without exploding, any thoughts on what would have happened if it had? Bigger/more exit holes in hull, prob a few more in overheard (& deck below) where shell detonates, harder to fix... Bismarck will be in even worse s...

Re: The End of the Invincible

Seems like a fitting end to a ship that has outlived it's usefulness, in terms of bang-for-buck (or pound). What else are they going to do with it? Scrapping beats getting sunk in action (dead sailors) or becoming a maintenance pig that consumes dollars (pounds) best used elsewhere... and it provide...

Re: Bismarck's 71st anniversary

I know you don't like it, Karl, but fact is, Bismarck was a nazi battleship. Squirm and carp all you want, then have a look at her fantail and the flag she was flying - Nazi. Nazi battleship. nazi, nazi, nazi. Relax, we all know the Bismarck sailed under the flag of the Third Reich, but there were ...

Re: Bismarck's 71st anniversary

Correct. Calling "nazi battleship" looks like coming from the screenplay from a stupid Hollywood movie like U 571 or Unglorious Bastards or Red Tails. Rubbish. I know you don't like it, Karl, but fact is, Bismarck was a nazi battleship. Squirm and carp all you want, then have a look at he...

Re: Tirpitz shelling New York

There's also the question of what her shell load out is if she's on a bombardment mission. Don't think it would matter all that much... Tirpitz and her magical scarp are supposed to be immune to penetration anyhow, a bunch of 14" HE would do plenty of damage. But likely, the US ship would have...

You posted that you were not impressed last time you visited the NJ. Have you decided to give that flawed treaty-limited ship another chance to impress you?

You know. I spent 6 years in the army. And my time in this nation's military has left me with the impression that the only thing service is good for is College Money. college money benefits are a great deal, far better than what they were 40 years ago I often and regularly debate exiling myself to ...

Re: FW190 v others

The new build Fw 190s are powered by a derivative of the Shvetsov ASh-82 http://www.flugwerk.de/html/page.php?GID=19&SID=4. I very much doubt if a bigger engine such as a R-2800 would fit. I don't see why it shouldn't fit; the R2800 is only an inch or two larger in diameter. It made more power ...

Re: P-47 Thunderbolt: The USAAF's Best Pursuit Aircraft

What I am trying to prove? Very easy. That the assertions of German fighter aircraft claims of inferiority, done without any real support aside from personal bias, are unfounded. Inferiority... well, when one compares relative merits of a couple of aircraft, one will generally be superior to the ot...

Karl, yours is a persuasive argument in favor of... something. Or is it against something? And just what is the... something? Some imagined Straw man, maybe?
