Re: How effective was the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean

On a side note, does anyone know of any sources that would succintly cover this theatre as at the moment I'm relying heavily on the O'Hara work and Barnett's ' Engage the Enemy More Closely both of which tend to be quiote blockish and hard to directly squeeze into the question faced. Thanks in adva...

Re: The Battle of Stromvaer

Garzke & Dulin in their "Axis and Neutral Battleships in WW2" have RENOWN hitting GNEISENAU with two 15" shells - the one through the foremast and the second "damaged and silenced the after turret". What do German records have to say about this second shell?

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

To Nearchus: ........ The papers are not, so far as I know, up on the internet. You can purchase them from the International Naval Research Organization ("Warship International") home page via the back-issues section for, I think, about $7.00 or $8.00 each. Part 1 was published in Warship...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

Nearchus wrote: "What radar was being used and what was its resolution (i.e. how far away from the destroyer would a splash have to be before it appeared as a separate image)? This issues are discussed in detail in the papers. To summarize them here would only lead to further confusion. The br...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

The Nowaki gunnery reports for Iowa's and New Jersey's are summarized, salvo by salvo, complete with spotting corrections observed and applied, in Part II of the Fischer-Jurens paper. Anyone who wants to can extract the number of probable straddles, and the number of guns in each straddling pattern...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

If the dispersion of the straddles obtained at 35000 yds is not known then the merit of having achieved one would have to be downgraded. I doubt if there is much relevance in quoting "typical" results. Is there a Gunnery Report of this episode? There is a gunnery report. I summarized it e...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

It is known that on one occasion Iowa class battleships obtained several straddles at ranges of 35,000 yds or more on an actual target in combat. A straddle is very easy to determine using the display of the mark 8 radar. You see the target in the center of the screen and you see the shell splashes...

Re: Battleship Top Ten

The Hipper hit the Achates, the first time (with the opening salvo ), from ~14,000 meters during the Artic night when it first opened battle at (IIRC) about 0930 hours. The ranges that it pummelled the Onslow was between 10,000 meters and 14,000 meters. When it reengaged the Achates at 11:17 hours ...

Re: Battleship Top Ten

... The even more under gunned Hipper, quickly damaged and sank destroyers from ranges as great as 20,000 yards. Which particular destroyers were these? I am aware that she sank one destroyer and damaged another in the engagement with Convoy JW51B but I was under the impression that the ranges were...

Re: Bismarck Final Moments

I'd say it could be the picture flip thing, I have seen this many times with photographs in history books. The print might have been made that way for all we know, maybe the developer liked it that way better. Or maybe the cruiser did have time to steam in a circle around to the other side, god kno...

Re: Bismarck Final Moments

The DORSETSHIRE torpedoed BISMARCK at 1010 and 1025. As the BISMARCK sank at 1040 there was time for DORSETSHIRE to have got around to the starboard side again. She would certainly have kept moving, probably circling the German ship.

Are not Navweaps talking about the Mk II gun rather than the Mk II mounting?

Re: 13.5 inch Barbette

The only RN pre-Dreadnought armed with 13.5" guns still around in 1914 was the REVENGE of 1894 and the Turks would hardly be interested in purchasing her!

Re: 13.5 inch Barbette

Perhaps from HMS ERIN (ex RESHADIEH built for Turkey). The Turks were still using Arabic script in 1914.
