Re: PoW readiness for active service

Hi Alecsandros, Re 'My impression is that there were plenty of experienced crews on both sides (see Hood, Ark Royal, Renown, Warspite, Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, Hipper, etc'). I would agree, but how many had actual ship to ship combat experience using their heavy guns, other that a few who had served ...

Re: PoW readiness for active service

Gentlemen, Re 'Combat experience, would it be fair to say that at this stage of the war very few 'heavy' ships on either side had actual combat experience? Also, as this subject is about PoW's readiness for active service; again, would it not be fair to say that had she had all her 10 guns working p...

Draining the ocean

Bill, I watched a repeat of a film in which you gave some advice called 'Draining the Ocean' where the hypothetically drained the sea away from Bismarck and showing her having been shot full of holes. I realise that the question of whether sh was sunk or scuttled has been dealt with on this Form in ...

Re: PoW readiness for active service

Gentlemen, On Sunday I wrote to Alberto: I realise that you perhaps feel duty bound not to reveal all the contents of the report, but does it not seem strange that after all this time it still remains confidential which must arouse suspicions as to why it was never made public - after all, in this d...

Re: PoW readiness for active service

Hi Pgollin, Many thanks for your and Alberto's replies, regarding the shell ring problem with DoY at North Cape, i accept what you said about the 'Extreme wave Movement', but this DoY was supposed to be one of the latest of the 'KG' battleships, so if she had to face a ship of similar size (Tirpitz)...

Re: PoW readiness for active service

Hi Alberto, You wrote: He should simply try to have all the information (including the most interesting report sent to Admiralty at the end of the gunnery trials in early May) before speaking of readiness of PoW anymore... Could you remind us what that report said? Also, while accepting that PoW wou...

Re: The Brits want out of the EU

Hi everyone, Totally agree with everything that has been written, the MP's who are determined to wreck 'Brexit' are a disgrace, if the Euro elections do go ahead it will be interesting to see how Farage's 'Brexit Party' gets on. Given the current dissatisfaction with the way the EU is run from a num...

Re: PoW readiness for active service

Gentlemen,
We seem to have gone 'off topic' rather quickly, the original question was about PoW's readiness for battle, not Victorious!

Re: PoW readiness for active service

Gentlemen, As I posted elsewhere, I do think that Capt Leach knew that PoW was not ready to fight a ship like Bismarck but was given little choice in the matter. I also think that the RN had more confidence in Hood than was really warranted (Pride of the Fleet etc) so they thought that she would com...

Hi Bill,
Would a small seaplane have had the fuel to get back to a safe place? It would have been a dangerous journey!

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

To Wadinga and others, If in my last post it was taken that I (inadvertently) suggested that Antonio and Alberto were the only knowledgeable contributors to this and other parts of the Forum, then of course I unreservedly apologize, I can assure you all that this is not the case, I have said on many...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Gentlemen, As always I have the greatest respect for the views expressed in this forum, but it seems to me that we have now reached an impasse on this particular subject. I have to say that while the technicalities of this debate has left any knowledge of this action that I thought I had far behind,...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

HMSVF Wrote: But she was designed to fire 10 not 7 or 8. That she matched a ship armed with 8 guns (firing occasionally only 7) is all well and good but she didn't do as she was designed. I think this is all contextual. Yes she did well with the guns that she was able to service, yes with the 7 or 8...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Gentlemen, Another question for you I'm afraid! There have been several points made about PoW's (and Hood's) guns being 'wooded' due to the angle of approach, just out of interest, had Rodney (or Nelson) with their three forward firing turret,s been there instead of PoW would her guns have been 'woo...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Gentlemen, I wonder if we might look at this in a slightly different light as to the actual blame sometimes directed at Capt Leach and place it at a much higher authority - the RN and the senior officers who ordered Hood and PoW to intercept Bismarck. Here we have an old battlecruiser with known wea...
