Re: Re arming the Twins
As I understand it, initially these two ships were to be simply improved Panzerschiffe, for which the improved 283mm guns in the triple turrets were already on order. When it was decided to expand them into battleships, the 283mm turrets were already "in the mill" while the 15" guns a...

Re: Falklands! 1939
In addition to Brazil supplying troops, Mexico supplied a P-47 squadron (equipped and trained by the US) to the Southwest Pacific area in 1945. That leads me to think there was some political drive to use some token force from our minor allies. Might it not have been possible, given the apparently g...

Re: Historical Naval actions that would make good movies?
To make a movie nowadays, it seems one must include "human interest" stories as well. And for good naval action, good, HISTORIC plot twists-and-turns are, I think, necessary. For the latter, the Bismarck saga stands up well, as would the Battle off Samar. As we've seen in "Sink the Bi...

Re: Naval fire support in Normandy
It seems that naval gunfire support really did play a key role in supporting the landings, in direct support of the troops on the beach, but in the main that was from smaller DD-caliber guns. All that I've read tends to support the point that large-caliber (BB) guns were less effective in taking out...

Re: misfire procedure?
Didn't most Wellin breeches also use electric-percussion primers? I would presume, as a first step, if electrical firing didn't work, percussion firing would be attempted immediately, no? I also understand there was a long wait if the primer didn't fire the main charge (I think Gene Slover over on t...

Re: Beatty or Scheer? Who Would You Want to Serve Under?
I recall reading somewhere that Hipper was "the only commander on both sides to have done everything right" at Jutland. It seems the majority opinion is that Hipper is the better commander. On the other hand, who to server under? Well, Hipper's battlecruisers certainly got out more than th...

Re: German 15" gun
I've seen various film clips where the cases from the lighter-caliber weapons were simply thrown on the deck. There is film of such happening on the Italian Littorios of what looks like a 5" gun crew (can't find a link right now): one guy just grabs the empty case ejected from the gun (I'm sure...

Re: How would you improve the Regia Marina?
I think it’s true that the RM felt intimidated by the RN. There’s an interesting article in another forum, http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8466 , on the “The Action off Calabria (Battle of Punta Stilo) - 9th July 1940”. It is a very good description of the battle, whose author...

Re: Sink the Bismark (1960)
My "favorite" flaw is the models in the Denmark Strait battle going in the wrong direction, or firing on the wrong side, depending on how you look at it.
It is unfortunate how the film industry, in general, thinks that history must be "improved" to play to the general public.

Re: Operation Unthinkable
Interesting topic, but remember, we're looking at history with hindsight. One must judge history from what things were like at the time, and what people knew and felt at the time. True, it was generally felt that Uncle Joe wasn't the most upright of fellows (which was clearly evident right up to Jun...

"However I can tell you that with the designs the RN (and also the IJN) had by 1921 I do not doubt that the seas would be keen to be dominated by the Pax Britanica..." If the war had dragged on without the US, would not Britain have been totally exhausted economically? As it was, Britain w...

Re: Effectiveness of the Japanese Battleships in naval combat
Hello, all! The projectile types used by the Japanese heavy units in the Guadalcanal battles has been discussed, but what of the propellant charges? I've just read something interesting in one of the reports of the US Naval Technical Mission to Japan from just after the war, specifically in its repo...
