Re: SMS Baden Fire Control

Am away from my books but I kinda remember that some of the NASSAUs or HELGOLANDs were fitted with the A.G. in the prewar (1911-1913) period initially for experimental reasons and shipped the equipment throrough Jutland and may indeed have used it there. These ships with four wing mounted turrets we...

Re: The supposed hit to Scharnhorst's boiler room

At the strong target inclination, hits wouldn´t traverse the ship from beam to beam but from aftwardships to further forward. A funnel base hit, exploding in the interdeck space between main and upper armour deck thus is plausible. A boiler hump hit is not -the target angle would be too high, plus t...

Re: The supposed hit to Scharnhorst's boiler room

Most of the survivors were from the upper positions on Scharnhorst, and a funnel hit would probably have been witnessed by at least some of the survivors. Only four out of 37 survicors were from upper positions. However, among the many inconsistencies noted by british interrogators, the following h...

Re: German use of reduced charges at Jutland?

I found confirmation of the use of differential charges (full and reduced charges) during my look through the war diaries of LÜTZOW 1916. gr. Gef. Ladung -große Gefechtsladung (large service charge) kl. Gef. Ladung -kleine Gefechtsladung (small service charge) "Gefecht" means combat, this ...

Re: Why was USN cruiser shooting so poor?

You may add the mediterranean cruiser battles between RN and RM. In cases were the range was medium or long, hitting rates were abyssmal poor on both sides. Some of these actions had a fairly large number of cruisers involved in long range gunnery (18,000-24,000 yard).

Re: Why was USN cruiser shooting so poor?

The post from matrose is a repost of data, I tried a couple of years ago to collect for a discussion on another navweaps thread. I am aware that some of the data need update (HIPPER has been mentioned, but AS is another example). The collection was done in order to explore real service hit rates at ...

Re: Bismarck in place of PoW

I tend to agree and would even go further to say that I haven´t seen any other BB (or cruiser..) gunnery performance at medium or long range, conducted by the RN, which obtained the same skill of gunnery as PoW did in Denmark Strait. It´s 5.1% hit rate was an exceptionally good performance in compar...

Re: PRINZ EUGEN war diary february 1942?

That´s one of the questions I hope to get an answer from the war diaries. The MDV doesn´t specify detection range but it had to be closer than 55hm. While diagnostic, remember the listening condition. Beeing able to detect torpedo at high platform speed, even if the vessel is as long as was PE (with...

PRINZ EUGEN war diary february 1942?

Just wondering, does anybody know whether or not the cruisers war diary still exists or is avaiable anywhere? Have been looking for some data on GHG detection. Hackmann writes that: " The effectiveness of her listening gear was amply demonstrated during the war. Her captain boasted that his shi...

Re: Could the Type XXI U-boat have won the war?

This is part of an excerpt I wrote to a friend in this matter: The problem with an idea that type XXI would be feasable in 1943 is multifold. As a matter of fact, the XXI benefitted by it´s late arrival (beeing introduced to production by late 43 and early 44) in one or the other form from advances ...

Re: Armor penetration of HE shells

It says that 17mm Wh armour material (barely) offers some degree of protection against lateral fragmentation of 150mm HE nose fused projectiles. -or that 28mm Wh are required to protect from 283mm HE nose fused, f.e. However, distance to burst is unknown and keep in mind that Wh material in this thi...

Re: Beauty & the Beast

To be fair, the italian dispersion issues appear not to have been as grave as the french ones (new BB´s) in this period by a considerable margin. 500m total dispersion is quite low, actually. That equals to roughly ~300m 1 sigma probability and that´s roughly as good or poor as in other navies. LITT...

Max. aviability was little over 120 type XXI submarine aviable early in 1945 with only a fraction in front flotillas. Just keep one thing in mind: The closest parallels to type XXI were the soviet ZULU-class Die...

YUKU issues anyone else?

Hi mates, as You know, I am also acive in navweaps board. For some strange reason, however, I cannot post there anymore. Whenever I login and try to add a reply, the server reroutes me to login once more. Doing that and returning to posting stuff, I again have to login. That beeing said, it´s basicl...
