Re: 70th Anniversary, sinking of the Bismarck

Hello Bismarck Fan, I do agree, the scene you suggest would have been a wonderful sight! The reason I have chosen to paint two paintings, one of each ship, is to celebrate the magnificence of each - the imposing might and beauty of the Hood, and the state of the art menace and strength of the Bismar...

Re: 70th Anniversary, sinking of the Bismarck

Many thanks for the information. My family live in Cornwall, so it is possible that I may be able to get down to Culdrose. Let's hope that I can get the paintings finished in time!

Best wishes,
David Folland

Re: 70th Anniversary, sinking of the Bismarck

Hello Antionio, Herr Nilsson and everyone, Thank you so much for your trouble in sending me the information and the pictures. I will definitely refer to them in the course of my painting. I had realised about the absent stripes, but you make some good points which will, I'm sure, be useful to me. My...

Re: 70th Anniversary, sinking of the Bismarck

Hi, My reference books include 'The Battleships' (Johnston and McAuley), 'The Discovery of the Bismarck' (Ballard) 'Hood and Bismarck' (Mearns and White), 'Killing the Bismarck' (Ballantyne). I have tried to research the topic as thoroughly as possible, but I must stress that my two paintings - one ...

Re: Th story of the Hood and the Bismarck is 'cool' and 'awe

As a new member, I have only just seen this post, but it struck me how important it is. Many young people, and even not so young now, know nothing of the history of the Hood and the Bismarck, and its significance in WWII. I am just finishing Iain Ballantyne's excellent book "Killing the Bismarc...

JOIN US TO COMMEMORATE THE ANNIVERSARY In May this year, it will be the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the Bismarck after it's encounter with the Mighty Hood. To commemorate this poignant and significant historical event, I am embarking on an oil painting of the Bismarck in the Denmark Strait. ...
