Re: Naval fire support in Normandy

Had Omaha Beach been inflicted with even greater casualties, I am not sure the Allies could have stayed ashore. It was a close thing as it was and the lack of sufficient naval bombardment could have made ALL the difference. The US and RN BBs and Monitors provided heavy deep cover to the Allied landi...

Re: US Battleships

Why does any engagement against Tirptiz and Bismarck 1) have to be in the North Sea and 2) have to be at close range (inside 20,000 yards)? USN battleships were designed for combat outside of 30,000 yards or ideally, about 26,000 yards. The 2,700 lb US 16inch/45 shell would hurt both T and B at that...

Re: Dana Wynter has Died

While her role was fictional, she played it extremely well. May she rest in eternal peace. It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since that movie was released. :(

Re: Did Bismarck offer surrender?

RF, read what I write. I said the Italian Navy was untrained in night fighting, not the RN. As to evidence or proof, my opinion is good enough for me. You have no obligation to agree whatsoever. BISMARCK did not surrender and if you can prove that she did, do so.

Re: Did Bismarck offer surrender?

Yes, it is, more or less my opinion. As "fans" of the Royal Navy find flaws with BISMARCK, they tend to overlook or explain away those of HMS HOOD, HMS KING GEORGE V, HMS PRINCE OF WALES (crippled by lucky Japanese torpedo hit, otherwise would have lived through the massive torpedo attacks...

Re: Did Bismarck offer surrender?

If there was an offer to surrender, BISMARCK would have lowered her colors which she did not. It seems Brits love to enjoy the BISMARCK's end all in revenge for HMS HOOD. Brits still cannot bear the thought of HMS HOOD being sunk so easily. Face it folks, such is war and anytime a ship radios, "...

Re: Midway Anniversary, 68 years ago.

The loss of four fleet carriers was a major blow to the Nihon Kaigun. However, most of the pilots were rescued and enough of the technicians came through to form the core for crews of other carriers. Still on the list: Shokaku, Zuikaku CV, Junyo, Hiyo,CV, Zuiho, Ryujo, soon to complete Chitose and C...

Re: How would you improve the Royal Navy

I thing the 9-15inch gunned battleship with 20-4.5inch secondaries would have been the ideal design. If the RN had been given admin control and purchasing priority for FAA aircraft, the Royal Navy would have been better prepared for war, especially in the Far East. One of the reasons for building HM...

Re: Sink the Bismark (1960)

The destroyer supposedly sunk was the "Solun" (SP?) during Bismarck's last night fight. There were some scenes of men jumping overboard that appear to have been made from a cruiser and not HMS Vanguard. Please correct me if I am wrong. The scenes using HMS Vanguard really lent an aura of a...

Re: Marines in the Pacific vs Waffen SS

Perhaps another aspect to consider in a possible match up would be the desperation factor of the SS. As the war was coming to an end in Europe, the SS and Wehrmacht troops fought desperately to keep the Russians back on the Ostfront. SS troops were fanatic and threw themselves into assaults with rec...

Re: How would you improve the Regia Marina?

In retrospect, prior to WW2, I would not have rebuilt the four old battleships and in 1936 laid down the 45,000 ton 16inch gunned battleships (four), converted the Aquila in 1936 to an aircraft carrier and built more destroyers and escorts. The battleships built in 1936 would have forced a French re...

I ordered a painting from Wayne of H-44 and the hybrid battleship/carrier AIII. It is very well done and shows the two vessels operating off of the Norwegian coast. :D

Well, lwd, what happened in the war and why? Let me know so I can clue others in?
By the way, you are now on my ignore list. Your arrogant remarks can be quite insulting. To some, perhaps, to me absolutely. :kaput:

Re: Stunning Diorama on Model Warships gallery

The diorama is visually stunning. It seems Hood is awfully high out of the water but that may be a misjudgment on my part.
Great job in depicting one of the great naval tragedies of the 20th Century.

Re: Ideal battleship design

40mm guns were too light to engage Kamikaze's and 5inch became so by the end of the war. Proximity fuzes were what made the 5inch so effective. Twin 3/50s were substituted for all quad 40mm mounts at wars end, witness the armament of the Worcester and Des Moines class cruisers. The Iowas only retain...
