Re: Use of smoke screens at ports

smoke was widely used by both sides. since most bomb aiming was visual the smoke would make aiming or even finding reference points harder or impossible. other passive defenses used included radar reflectors, nets, painting, coal dust to hide water, false roads & RR tracks , phony airports, chan...

Re: The supposed hit to Scharnhorst's boiler room

how about the shock of a hit jar something in the drive system that would slow the ship but could be restored fairly easily. electrical feed pumps or a safety shut off valve for example

Re: Top ten most powerful navies in the world

all of the third world navies have a serious problem with graft, theft, and mismanagement which degrades their abilities in several ways. bad equipment or nor enough stuff. poor training. poor living conditions. breakdowns and shoddy repairs. by the way i include russia as third world here

Re: The most successful and most unsuccessful Warships

i do not agree that being sunk is necessarily a down check. there are times when you just have to face the fact that you have to put it all on the line. sometimes you come out and other times you don't . the question is did you perform you allotted task and was it worth the loss? would you consider ...

Re: Did the US Secret Service kill JFK??

thats a new one to me. i find it to be very unlikely for a couple of reasons. its very rare for a well maintained gun to fire when the safety is mover to off. yes it has happened but its rare even with misused weapons. any weapon used by the presidential protection unit is maintained by very well tr...

Re: Why was Diesel / Electric not used more?

old school ac motor control was pretty much limited to wound rotor induction motors which were both heavy and ran hot at reduced speeds. dc motors could be varied easier but still were usually limited in fine control since most used resistor banks and either stepper switches or drum controllers. thi...

Re: Depth Charges Aboard HM cruisers 1939-45

i have a problem with the idea that CVEs should not have been used as an anti Uboat weapon. hunter killer groups built around a CVE managed to kill a lot of boats. the combination of aircraft and escort ships became a boats worse nightmare. aircraft could cover a huge area and once contacting could ...

Re: Naval communications in WWII

if my memory serves [always a tricky thing] voice comm was short ranged. most common was TBS [talk between ships] and aircraft units which were line of sight. longer ranged used CW and a key. most scout aircraft carried CW gear as well as voice just for the range. CW was slower both due to key speed...

Re: Doctrine on crew accomidations

not sure of any formal doctrine but better accommodations do indicate in some ways the ships ability. with the crew in better shape they will be more able to withstand the rigors of combat, they will be able to spent longer periods at sea which only improves their function as a crew, moral should be...

Re: PT Boats: Unqualified success or mediocre at best??

i would consider them a success and useful but somewhat over blown. the few big successes they had were over reported and made to seem more common then they were. having said that i would also point out that they more that earned their way in almost uncountable small action, pin pricks if you will. ...

Re: Yamato: the greatest warship of all times

sorry but i cannot agree to label a ship that never really did anything useful in combat as the greatest. the largest fine. heaviest armed ok, biggest waste of resources damn straight. she wasn't even a good AA ship since she lacked decent radar and most of her AA weapons were the poor 25mm.
