Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?

Thank you Thorsten! Do you know of any other battleship or cruiser fire control system stabilizing for elevation and bearing in any way as Bismarck's? Was this a unique feature or was it more common than I am aware of? Best regards Frank Can't prove it, but I suspect that Prinz Eugen may have been ...

Re: Bismarck radar detector

Hello All, I wholeheartedly agree with Hans, the message inbound to Bismarck clearly indicates it was hoped her crew could detect and analyze the frequencies of British radars received by some system aboard ship. It may have been imagined that the British were using frequencies close enough to the ...

Re: bismark-after torpedo hit

Consider this situation from another aspect. Suppose the Bismarck was a US Navy battleship instead of German. What would a US naval crew have done in that situation, cut off from any outside help, the US Navy having a different culture, history and traditions to the KM? There is USS Intrepid, which...

Re: bismark-after torpedo hit

During Bismarcks testing in the Baltics with rudders locked at zero it was not possible to steer with engines. So they new it was an impossible task

Re: Can the German Navy Be Saved?

I'll think I will wait on that one. If the Soviet Union (sorry, Russia) thinks that Brexit makes their strategic position in Europe stronger then they will find they are mistaken. Especially if the EU vanishes and a new Germany emerges with Poland as its strategic ally...…. As long as Germany and s...

Re: Who won?

Hi dale3242 If you want to get caught up in an argument about this Thus ranges beyond 24 km are not practical. Better read up on the recent Iowa vs Vanguard in hypotheticals or the much longer Long range Gunnery, where erudite theoretical explanations are presented as to why even though more distan...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood

Gentlemen, I've been following this debate with interest but I'm afraid the mathematical calculations leave me 'dead in the water'! If this scenario was to take place then surely it would be fairer to assume that the KGV's involved had all their guns and radar working as they should which would pla...

Re: If Bismarck had made it to France

. We have to keep in mind however that, had Bismarck repairs lasted just a while, the German Atlantic network of tankers and support ship would have been anyway destroyed, thus preventing any further attempt to carry a serious merchant war in the Ocean and making unavoidable the "Channel Dash&...

Unmanned drone tanks, AFVs, etc. are being considered. Not macho enough for the old school, I think. Hmmm ..... remotely guided/operated drones of all types are undeniably here to stay. I am however troubled by the potentially dangerous unintended consequences of the inevitable next technological s...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

And did Bismarck suffer a hit in her boiler room during her final fight? Some claim so. Her vitals were supposed to be immune against such hits at these ranges. If you read the book from the Baron than there was no such hit. Even if no ship is immune against Shells fiert at point blank range. Fortu...

Re: Communication lines

Well, the gunnery control, bridge etc were exposed positions by definition and these are the places they can be knocked out..... a situation on any ship. But it is often pointed out in debates as a particular weakness of Bismarck's compared to other BBs which are said to have "proper" pro...
