Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

1/ Twins Armour belt was designed to keep out 330 mm shells 2/ I have just read the combat reports of every single engagement the twins fought in versus warships and mechanical breakdown of one system or another is a theme, machinery even when not in action being sensitive 3/ According to experts th...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

In answer to a couple of questions or points. The Twins were not good cruisers and only really North Atlantic boats. in operation Berlin they were reliant on a chain of oilers. This was down to their machinery. Range is interesting, range in that how far guns could fire was not really a factor in WW...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

Lets transpose again. No one would rationally argue the Scharnhorst could swap places with Renown and attack two Renowns in the same way the Renown attacked two Scharnhorsts. The issue is simple, 14inch shells of the DoY brought Scharnhorst to destruction, the 15 inch shells of the Bismarck would do...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

Facts are being rationally considered. The Scharnhorst had no confidence in engaging ships armed with 15 inch guns. Ships in General were hard to sink especially by gunfire unless they exploded. Scharnhorst according to the reports I have read blew up and then sank the explosion hastening the end wh...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

Exactly in the real world 14 inch and 15 inch shells could cripple the Scharnhorst that's why they did not fight. You our absolutely correct the Scharnhorst was a greyhound and a fine ship but she was no match for a battleships guns. Like I said against the Bismarck she could blow up just like Hood

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

The Dunkerque was immobilized by 15 inch shells her armour proved inadequate. The Scharnhorst was fought to a standstill by DoY with British destroyers and Cruisers effectively saving the Germans the bother of scuttling her by putting torpedoes into her. Interestingly a very high percentage of RN ve...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

" A long range raider would've been way better off with a bunch of 6inch guns then 4 15inch guns. You dont need heavy caliber guns to be an effective radar. Courageous as a raider in pratice sounds not too bad, but she was expensive to build and to maintain, compare to a light cruiser. Honestl...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

I'm sure the data is online or you have it to hand but to my knowledge the Dunkerques armour was desined to keep out 11 inch shells to 18,000 yards and was easily knocked out by British gunfire at Mer el Kebir. No reason to for me to believe the Bismarcks guns would be any less effective whatever ra...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

Towns don't move, and as a long range raider the Courageous was unsurpassed. Like I said the Germans would have broke youtr arm off to have her and would have heralded the convoy system and the dimunation of the Grand Fleet a lot earlier. Light cruisers the Germans had even quick ones like Bremse bu...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

The Scharnhorst blew up before she sank and I see no reason to suppose the Dunkerque could keep 15 inch shells away from her magazine. All sorts of highly regarded experts say the Hood could not have endured a magazine penetration and have a lot of complex equations to prove it. But have a magazine ...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

Its not running away its scouting, which before aircraft was the Battlecruisers true role in fleet engagements. You outrange the cruisers so they have to come on to you or retire. If they retire you follow hitting them with 15 inch shells if they come on to you retire hitting them with 15 inch shell...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

The Renown has light armour true but don't expect me to fight like Beatty. I'm at least 4 knots faster in flat calm and more in a sea I'll sail to the best light for me and worst for you just like Tovey and the Bismarck could not hit. My ship also handles like a destroyer while your battlecruiser ha...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

Pretty easy one that, The Hood would have beaten every other battlecruiser on a one on one , operate in any weather and only Alaska , Dunkerque's and Scharnhorst's were faster. As for blowing up it least it got in a position to blow up and if your poorly handled by your Admiral you can't really get ...

Re: Best rebuilt battleship?

The West Virginia would not be even in a position to be in the initial stage of the fight. In "that" storm with 28,000 SHP the West Virginia would likely be going backwards. The Renown has 120,000 horses and a superior hull form, the Scharnhorst had 165,000 shp and was 20 years younger tha...

Re: Best rebuilt battleship?

Nope I don't feel that those destroyers were there to protect the Transports. America commissioned hundreds of DE's which by that stage of the war since the submarine threat in the Atlantic had been defeated had nothing to do but protect transports from submarine attack
