Re: Spanish American War naval combats

A while back Ken Thompson wrote: "The success of the 8 inch gun in the Philippines encouraged the US Navy to load up the subsequent battleships with the 8 inch guns as the intermediate battery. Going to the extreme with a 2 story main turret." Incorrect: The USS Kearsarge & Kentucky, w...

Re: SMS Tirptiz (ex Salamis)

Except for the missing main armament, the ship was almost complete by Aug of 1914. The German Navy did examine the possibility of completing the ship but dropped the idea due to the long lead time needed for the heavy guns - estimated at 2 to 2.5 years by Krupp - so they certainly saw value in the b...

Re: Swiftsure & Triumph

By 1903-04 these ships were almost as out of step with German design philosophy as they were with current British designs. Its also quite likely that the Brits would have stepped into prevent such a sale just as had with the Russians.

Swiftsure & Triumph

While reading thru some posts on the Dreadnought era the subject of HMS Agincourt came up & the fact that was acquired under odd circumstance and was, in the end, something of a white elephant. This got me on to the subject of HMS Swiftsure & Triumph, another pair of oddball ships acquired u...

Swiftsure & Triumph

While reading thru some earlier posts regarding HMS Agincourt, the subject of HMS Swiftsure & Triumph came up. The writer, and I don't remember who, stated that these two ships were purchased by the RN the during an earlier war scare & the need to match German naval expansion. Not really the...

SMS Tirptiz (ex Salamis)

On another board a while back there was a discussion of the fact hat the Germans decide not finish the Greek BB Salamis for use with the High Sea Fleet. This was due to the fact Krupp felt it would take two years or more to furnish the heavy guns and turrets that would be needed. On this other board...

Re: Worst admiral of all time

Getting back to the discussion of Erik Bey, what of his immediate predecessor in command in Norway, Oskar Kummetz. It was his abject failure to take advantage of the situation at the Battled of the Barents Sea (where he had the opportunity to smash an Arctic Convoy) that led to Reader downfall and f...

Re: Franco-Italian Naval War, 1940-41

RF wrote "Yes, but the British would be involved as allies of the French" My scenario assumes that without the potential threat from Germany, Britain is far more interested in trying to contain Japanese ambitions in the Far East. While most definitely pro-French, the British remain neutral...

Franco-Italian Naval War, 1940-41

After Hitler first came to power in 1933 there was a brief period when the French & Italians contemplated an Anti-German Alliance. These plans came to naught when the Italians invaded Ethiopia in 1935. Suppose the Italians had more forthcoming about their plans for East Africa & the alliance...

Re: No Washington Treaty...

Regarding warship design and development beyond the early 30's without the Treaty, as with any "counter-factual argument" that becomes more and difficult to predict the further you get from the date at which you skew the Historical Time Line. However, as I stated in my last post, I doubt t...

Re: No Washington Treaty...

This thread seems to have wandered a long way from the original topic - "What if there was no Washington Treaty". So, if the three way building race between US, Japan & Britain had continued what would have been the effects on warship development through the 20's & early 30's? (I p...

Washington Treaty & its effects

While lots of time and energy has been spent discussing the various Capital Ships scraped and/or cancelled under the Washington Treaty, it seems to me that relatively little has has been said about the Treaty's effects on other classes of warships. As I see it, the Washing Treaty essentially created...
