I see what you mean about the weather, but it was'nt exactly flat calm during the final engagement with Bismarck and gunnery officers are supposed to practice and be able to make hits in all weathers, surely 4000m should be almost point blank for a modern battleship like DoY, seven or eight hits ou...

Hmm, remember that New Jersey was sent to bombard Lebanon in 1984 and missed its targets by as much as 10,000 yards. In fact, it didn't hit anything it aimed at.

One of the factors in many of the battles around Guadalcanal and the Solomons was just how bad the US Navy commanders were, not only admirals but individual captains as well. The theory propounded by some is that, quite frankly, captains of US warships were just too old, and at that stage in the war...

To sink HMS Glorious the ‘twins’ expended 387 x 11” shells registering only 5 hits plus 1148 x 6” shells, which don’t seem to have hit anything. If we take the battle between disproportionate naval forces further you come upon HMS Manchester being sunk by the MAS boats MS16 and MS22.

May be worth pointing out that the Griffon rotates in the opposite direction to the Merlin.
Caught Spitfire pilots out during the war as the Griffon engined ones 'swung' in the 'wrong' direction on take-ff.
