Re: If Bismarck had made it to France

Would the Channel Dash still have happened if BS had made it to Brest?

Its my understanding the entire 'Channel Dash' was due to Hitler's disenchantment with Raeder's surface campaigns.

Re: Soviet Union carriers

Gentlemen, A most interesting thread,I often wonder what use carriers would be in an all out war (WW3 without nukes). Yes, carriers are very useful for threatening smaller nations like North Korea and for protecting battle landing groups, but in this world of long range missiles and nuclear subs, I...

Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?

Back in late 1960s I bought an Airfix Model of Tirpitz & HMS Hood, as well as others, so even as a kid I was interested.

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

It was actually a turbo-generator room that was penetrated and shock and splinters damaged the next inboard bulkhead to an auxiliary boiler room and an adjacent bulkhead to a main boiler room. It only works with the shell traveling under the main belt that was not deep enough....which I've argued w...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

And did Bismarck suffer a hit in her boiler room during her final fight? Some claim so. Her vitals were supposed to be immune against such hits at these ranges. There may be some confusion here from the DS battle, where one of the three hits by POW did penetrate a boiler room, where five stokers su...

...very fast rate of fire (for a battleship)...
Yet A/A tell us that their RoF was glacially slow and only capable of 93 rounds over 14 minutes, even when all 8 x 38cm guns can bear on the target.
Such is the nature of target acquisitionS.

Re: Prinz Eugen torpedo missed launch at DS

firstly this forum desperately needs a "like" button on peoples posts, Antonio & alecsandros response are worthy of recognition.

If in fact the range was 14km- the only way ultra long range torpedo launch would work would be massed torpedo launch before the enemy can detect or react to the threat.

Re: Question about armor effective thickness

Do you mean the "semi infinite penetration?

If so the "semi infinite" depth of penetration is said to be more than 1.5 times the length of the projectile.

Re: Alaska Class: Battlecruise or Large Cruiser Semi-debate

The PBS hull was rated for 30 knots but could only reach 29.4 knots in ultra light trails. It seems adding bulges cost them a knot off the top speed. The rest was increased displacement from enlarging the superstructure/armaments, to meet the numerous roles demanded. Reportedly mid life plans inclu...

Re: Alaska Class: Battlecruise or Large Cruiser Semi-debate

The Alaskas were built to counter a rumored Japanese super cruiser project that could hunt down their own heavy cruisers and carriers. They also built the Alaskas to hunt down any enemy cruiser while being able to speed away from anything powerful enough to sink it head on. The Scharn Twins (WW2 no...

Re: A 15" gunned Scharnhorst at North Cape

Obviously we have to agree to disagree. I gave up measuring improved KM performance based on a singular battle, especially a surface battle. Any improvement has to start and end with the U-boat war. To that end two works particularly influenced my thinking. Norman Freedman Network Centric Warfare & ...

Re: A 15" gunned Scharnhorst at North Cape

Well following up on TASKS FOR THE WEHRMACHT , Groner in 1928 was warning the entire German military/government that unless they were ready to fight a two year campaign of "continuous war" WITH ALL OF EUROPE- they had better be ready to back down from ANY ADVENTURE. Something Hitler clearly ignored ...
