Re: Gen.Mark Clark's Mistake at ANZIO in 1944

Apologies for the silly remark Dave--After the near-failure at Salerno and the debacle of the Rapido, and following the disappointments of Anzio, and now the hard-fought success of the past two weeks, there was no way Clark was going to risk a major set-back now. To his mind, AOK 14 had to be faced,...

Re: Italian fascism and Italy's WW2 performance

De Felice argued that Mussolini was a revolutionary modernizer in domestic issues, but a pragmatist in foreign policy who continued the Realpolitik policies of liberal Italy (1861–1922). In the 1990s, a cultural turn began with studies that examined the issue of popular reception and acceptance of F...

Re: Gen.Mark Clark's Mistake at ANZIO in 1944

OK Dave you win--Alexander gave the order to Truscott--Clark's subordinate--how convenient. In the end, Clark was no military genius—few commanders in history are—but he led his army as well as the difficult theater of operations and the current skill level of the U.S. Army would permit. Judging whet...

Dave--Nor do I have any knowledge of Intel which resulted in Clark;s decision to disobey his superior FM Alexander-nor do I know if it would have shortened the war.General Clark CHOSE to enter Rome instead for whatever reason.

Re: The C atastrophic Sinking of HMS Glorious in 1940

Good Morning Alberto-just a thumbnail sketch of D;Oyly Hughes In June 1939, as a captain, he was given command of the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious. D'Oyly-Hughes had learned to fly and continually rejected the advice of the ship's professional aviators, according to Winton.[2] Returning to Britain ...

The lead ship, identified as KMS Blücher, a German heavy cruiser, continued, she came into the sights of the 61-year-old Kommandørkaptein Anderssen’s torpedoes. Those torpedoes were around 40 years old and had been made in Austria-Hungary. They had only ever been test fired. In a three torpedo salvo...

Re: Ships sunk in port by aircraft attacks

At 5.15am on 10th April 1940 sixteen Skua aircraft from 800 and 803 Squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm took off from Hatston in the Orkneys to make the 300 mile trip to Bergen, Norway. Each plane had one 500lb semi armour piercing bomb. The round trip of 600 miles was just within the range of the Skua. ...

Re: The C atastrophic Sinking of HMS Glorious in 1940

Thank you for your interest and replies Antonio Seventy-nine years after the worst Royal Navy tragedy at that time, relatives of the 1,531 men who perished are still asking the same questions asked in 1940: Why did they die? Why did no one pick them up from the freezing Norwegian waters for three wh...

Re: The C atastrophic Sinking of HMS Glorious in 1940

,The captain of HMS Glorious, Guy D’Oyly Hughes, had ordered Air Commander J.B. Heath to attack certain enemy shore positions in Norway . Heath refused on the basis that the targets were ill-defined and that his aircraft were not suitable for the mission. D’Oyly Hughes did not take this well. Once a...

Re: Gen.Mark Clark's Mistake at ANZIO in 1944

On the whole, historians have not been kind to General Mark Clark and his handling of the Italian camp aign. He wavered at Salerno, say his detractors, sent the Texans of the US 36th Division to needless deaths across the River Rapido, and most heinous of all, disobeyed General Alexander’s orders to...

The BritishComet tank, mounting the new 77 mm HV gun in a new lower profile and part-cast turret. The tank was widely respected as one of the best British tanks of the war, and continued in se...

SOUTH DAKOTA sustained at least 26 projectile hits. It is estimated that one hit was 5-inch, six were 6-inch, eighteen were 8-inch and one was 14-inch. The calibre of these hits was estimated from the damage produced and fragments recovered of one projectile. In many cases the size of the entry hole...
