Re: 1/350 HMS Hood, scratchbuild
Two paravanes were mounted just aft of the conning tower, stowed to a bulkhead. Two others were stored in the lockers in the forward breakwater. There are many pictures of paravanes at The Vickers Photographic Archive . The size was determined from several Anatomy of the Ship series and estimates fr...

Re: 1/350 HMS Hood, scratchbuild

Re: Bismarck Speed
At least it's less confusing than for most navies, who give their speed in rpm. This rpm has nothing to do with the actual rpm, but it translates as a speed to them. Or so I've heard

Re: Bismarck Speed
The more I look at it the more likely I think the high numbers I read are due to someone translating the speed in knots to mph and subsequent sloppiness on the part of someone. This is well possible. A nautical mile is around one arc minute of the world's supposed circumference of 40,000 kilometers...

Re: 1/350 HMS Hood, scratchbuild
I have updated My blog The etch set presented in Custom Photoetch Set Part II is now done. There was a slight delay as set received some minor adjustments as required by the etches and I felt I could add one more part. The set was etched by Saemann Ätztechnik in Germany, with excellent results. Here...

Re: Bismarck Speed
The hull speed is caused by either wave interaction of the hull wave components. If the wave is very slender, you have a small wave from the bow and stern, and you reach the hump speed when the wave from the bow reaches the length of the ship (Froude = 0.5). For some ships, waves from the forward an...

Re: Bismarck Speed
Very slender (multihull) ships don't have a lot of wave making resistance so that makes it easy to pass the hump speed. So, cruisers with an 1:10 beam-to-length ratio have less difficulty going to higher speeds than tankers. Fast catamarans are always very slender (double) hulls. Once over their hum...

Re: Bismarck Speed
That is correct, though not fully planing. When you go from Froude above 0.5, you are entering regions where dynamic lift is becoming important, going to semi-planing. From Froude 0.5 to 0.6., the resistance curve can even drop a little bit. You get full planing near Froude = 1. Using wiki data (yes...

Re: Bismarck Speed
Most destroyers can go to much higher speed regimes than large surface warships. That is, if they have the proper hull shape. WWII cruisers and battleships do not have this hull shape and usually stick around Froude numbers (ship speed / sqrt(g*L_waterline) ) of around 0.3-0.33. Destroyers can go to...

Re: Bismarck Speed
To claim that PE could do 40 knots makes this information quite anecdotal and unreliable. It's simply not realistic to make such a claim while mentioning that the records were deliberately misleading. At 40 knots, she'll generate waves longer than the ship itself which is prohibitively power-consumi...

Re: Bismarck Paint storage
IIRC, the paint store for Bismarck is just above the propeller shaft lines, deep within the hull.

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
That is quite typical of any shipyard - shipowner relationship. The yard is subjected to contractual fines if the specs are not met within a certain margin. The owner can even reject the ship and leave the yard with a new yacht. This does happen, although I guess the owner will have a good standing ...

Re: Speed - Bismarck versus Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
Really? And what are you going to do once you find out it's a knot too slow while the war is going on? Send it back under warranty? Reject the ship? Sell it to a third party? Or you could accept the results from the shake-down cruise and deploy it. Once you've ironed out all showboat problems, you'l...

Re: 1/350 HMS Hood, scratchbuild
Looks like a good model, some issues we recently found have been included. A few errors here and there but nothing very difficult to correct. The HMS Hood site has a good article what to correct on the model.
