Re: Best Books on Jutland?

Hello Byron, I really can't support your suggestion of Frost's book. My observations were included in another recent thread. Summarized: Another uncritical cheerleader for the imperial German Navy is the improbably named Holloway Halstead Frost, a US Naval officer whose 1930s Jutland book is quoted...

Friedman's The British Battleship

Has anyone else bought this? A first glance through and a read of the first three chapters suggest that it's of the usual high standard, with the usual serviceable prose and a good selection of photographs. The amount of important and interesting information in the voluminous photo captions makes fo...

Re: Why was Rodney and Nelson so slow?

I hate to reply to my own post but I posted in haste. The Nelsons had the same speed as the aspirational N3s and were a couple of knots faster than the previous Revenge class. The slightly faster Queen Elizabeths had originally been planned at the 'standard' 21 knots and only rose to 24 due to the w...

Re: Why was Rodney and Nelson so slow?

The post-Jutland lesson, as interpreted by the RN, was that protection and firepower were more important than speed. This led to the design of the G3/N3 classes as the best-protected and hardest-hitting warships in the world. Then came Washington. Something had to give and that something was the mac...

What would life have been like on the open hangar deck of a US CV? Doesn't bear thinking about.

Re: Tiger V Firefly

I don't have my original sources to hand (they're upstairs and I'm a lazy beggar) but I recall that the 17-pounder firing APDS rounds had better penetration than the German 88, especially the version mounted on the Tiger. I think the APDS round was slightly more inaccurate than the standard APCBC ro...

Friedman's 'Fighting the Great War at Sea'

Does anyone know what's going on with this book? I had it on order at Amazon ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1848321899/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2T8I0PV3QHSDP&coliid=I3HHDSIPWAHNQK ) but a couple of days before the re-scheduled publication date, it became unavailable. And n...

Another Friedman tome

I have to admit that this volume http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1848 ... ROKL5A1OLE has my juices going.

My only concern is that he's churning them out at a great rate of knots at the moment. I hope he can maintain the quality.

Concentrating on just the RN, there is this book about the Destroyers & Frigates which includes details on the designs that were passed over... http://www.amazon.co.uk/British-Destroyers-Frigates-Second-World/dp/1848320159/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1389532470&sr=1-2&keyword...

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal

I don't understand why Rodney's hit count was so low. I served for a time on Tanks in my state's National Guard. I could have hit Bismark with a tank gun just about every time at that range . Probably about 90% or better. I didn't have to deal with the movement of the Ocean, but my target was compa...

Re: Cold War navies

I think there might be a problem of it being too early here, with so much material on both sides still classified. Fair point. I was heavily involved in WW3 naval wargaming back in the 80s but I've since forgotten everything I ever knew. Now I suspect that even what I did know might not be 100% acc...

Cold War navies

Does anyone know of a good history of the Cold War at sea, preferably focusing on the ships and navies, themselves? I'm looking for something that describes the 'why' of the different classes. What were they designed to do or to counter?
