Re: Hood v Vittorio Veneto

Aberto wrote Hi, the belt of Littorio's was 4.4 meters high, extending for 2 meters under water at normal battle load (source: E.Bagnasco, pag 56-58 "Littorio class battleships", Italian edition). It was considered enough for Mediterranean seas and for a ship that did not change much her d...

Re: Hood v Vittorio Veneto

Another consideration is the small area covered by the VVs main belt. It was only 3.8 m in height with 2.3 above the waterline and only 1.5m below the waterline at deep load. Compared this to the KGV with a main belt of 7.2 m in height with 2.6 above the waterline and 4.6 meters below the waterline....

Re: Hood v Vittorio Veneto

The ace in the hole for the QE"s is the 15 /42. It's battle tested, faster firing , more accurate and has a bursting charge twice as large as the Italian 15/50. It seems to me that all of the high velocity big guns have inconsistency when it comes to accuracy. If the Italians want to make it a ...

Alecsandros wrote ... there is no evidence for either of those "penetrations" that you mention I suppose the hard evidence is the Scharnhorst wreck on the ocean floor, but the penetrating hits I described are from Angus Kostram's "The battle of North Cape" page 116 to 132 and in ...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

I think the main weakness of the Scharnhorsts protection is the thin 40 mm upper belt which wasn't enough to de cap incoming heavy shells leaving the main armoured deck exposed, very much unlike the Bismarck. I also think it may have directly lead to the loss of the ship regarding the hit, damage to...

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

So in summary there is evidence of three penetrations of the Scharnhorst "s armour by 14 inch shells . 1. Anton turret/barbette, 2.penetration of the main belt at the waterline, and 3. the boiler room hit.

Re: Best Battlecruiser WW1 and WW2

It doesn't really matter what the twins were designed to protect against when there is real world evidence. We know that the first hit from the DoY 14" guns made at least a partial penetration into the magazine of Anton turret. Royal Navy witnesses suggest a penetration of the turret or perhaps...

Re: King George V vs. Rodney

So the 14/45 has a range of 39,0000 yds , or about 13,000 yards farther than the longest hit ever made by a BB on a moving target in combat. I think we can all agree that the Rodney has no effective real world advantage in gun range. Improvements made in the KGV vs Rodney -The KGV has the advantage ...

Re: King George V vs. Rodney

Alecsandros wrote Rodney's 16" guns had 5km more range than KGV's 14" guns. The destructive power of a 16" projectile was considerably larger than that of a 14" projectile. You are pretty far out on the range, the 14/45 max is 38,560 yds while the 16/45 is 39,090 yds, from naval ...

Re: King George V vs. Rodney

I don't see how the KGV can lose. The speed advantage will allow it to completely dictate the terms and range of the battle. This is especially important when you consider the all front disposition of the Rodney's main armament. If the Rodney scores the first hit and say knocks out one 4 gun turret,...

Re: Death of the Scharnhorst in ww2

Busch's account is based on the reports of the survivors (and also the destroyer crews), and it was done during the years right after the war. He basically passes on their descriptions of the events as they recalled them with out much filtering and sorting out. The inconsistencies are typical of ey...

Re: Death of the Scharnhorst in ww2

I've got The drama of the Scharnhorst by Fritz Busch, The Death of the Scharnhorst by John Winton and The battle of Northcape by Angus Konstam. I found Busch's book to be an interesting account from the German perspective but also to be so biased to the point that it seriously detracts from the book...

Re: 38 cm shells

I wouldn't really say that the 38cm/52 is under rated or over rated, it probably depends more on who you are talking too. It is a big gun that fires a comparatively light shell and that may lead to the strong opinions about its merits. On the other hand I believe that the British 14/45 is much more ...
