Re: Italian Navy Movie 1941

Hello This is a well known Italian neorealism film directed by Rossellini who would later become famous. Among the foundations of neorealism was shooting with non-professional actors and in real locations. As far as I can recognise, the bridge, wardroom, fire direction, engine rooms, and most surpri...

Re: The bomb that sank the Arizona

Basically the context is very different from a projectile. The angle of incidence was almost 90º. Plunging-fire is about 30-45º in the most favourable case and with very low possibility of impact. In the 20s, it was known that a piercing bomb, dropped high enough, would beat any possible armoured de...

Re: Le Bismarck & Supermarina. LOS! Nº42

Indeed. With a full war plan, the Italians could have attacked Malta with a surprise attack, destroy the ships of the Mediteranean Fleet that were in Valleta harbour, take the island and then follow up with seaborne landings around Alexandria to facilitate speedy capture of the Suez Canal. The focu...

Ciao Alberto

I saw, last night the article superficially. It is likely that the reference to Storia Militare is a confusion of mine. Tonight I will see it quietly and I will give more details.

Re: Prince Eugane v AGS

International politics were too unstable. Hitler's plans were constantly changing. Scharnhorst and Genisenau were initially "pocket battleships" and were modified after the construction of the Dunkerque class. The reason was that Dunkerque was a superior warship over "pocket battleshi...

Hi all Pocket battleships were super-heavy cruisers more stronger than heavy cruisers and more faster than "capital ships" (except battlecruisers) Pocket battleships were not a option after Dunkerque construction. Without speed advantage over new battleships, The concept lost its purpose....

Re: Richelieu vs. Bismarck

There is only one deck in Richelieu (my very large TIFF images are actually of Jean Bart) between the 22 mm weather deck and the 170 mm armour deck over the main magazines. The weather deck further aft seems to be 26 mm over 150 mm but there is still only one deck between. I think that the British,...

Re: Ian Ballantyne's views on Bismarcks distruction

Unfortunately a recent book by Friedman repeats some of these topics. The armour deck was the communications deck: vital wiring and piping were installed atop it, where they were vulnerable to plunging fire and also to fragments knocked out of the main belt. Presumably that was done to clear the ove...
