Re: Midway Debris Field
Just the usual books. Hopefully sufficient for what I'd like to examine. Somewhere in the Japanese archives the logbooks may still exist. I've seen people claim to cite locations from them, so copies of the relevant entries may be available.marcelo_malara wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2020 1:42 am what data do you have on the location of the battle?

Re: Midway Debris Field
Did not see anything on their web presence. Will end them a message.
I had hoped this had been published somewhere, a bit of legit journalism somewhere.

Midway Debris Field
Been surfing about for a map (if any is published) of the locations of the debris of the four Japanese carriers. Wanted to try locating those positions in relation to the Japanese records of location during the battle, & particularly when hit. Anyone aware of anything published with the location...

Another breadcrumb: Merchant Marine Act of 1936. The attic makes me sneeze. :( Hope the dusty attic did not cause lung disease. Its looks at this point the answer is a qualified yes. Still, examples of common tankers refueling ships in ports or sheltered water would be useful for the question. Wond...

... The survival of the two American BBs versus the shoals of Japanese torpedoes launched against them that night was a small and inexplicable miracle, especially in connection with Sodak. Why the US DDs were successfully targeted by torpedoes but not Sodak or Washington remains a mystery. B My tak...

Re: Gen.Mark Clark's Mistake at ANZIO in 1944
The German 10th Army was using three highways to retreat north. Capturing Valmonte would cut only Route Six. The other two roads were on the east side of a spine of the Appinne mountains and impractical for the VI corps to reach. WGF Jacksons 'The Battle For Italy' has a map illustrating this. I am ...

Peeling back like a banana sounds more like a in bore explosion. I wonder what other observation or evidence us available here.

Logistics Question Tanker Refueling
Quite a while ago I saw a photo in a magazine, of a oil tanker in harbor & a cruiser alongside refueling. The caption text indicated this was in a harbor in the Pacific. It also referred to the tanker as a 'floating fuel depot'. I don't recall if the tanker was a ordinary transport, or a fleet o...

Re: Naval Battle of Guadalcanal
Just checked several versions of this battle. The short version is the SD was leading and perhaps 500-1000 meters to the Washintons starboard - closer to the enemy. When the SD was hit its speed fell off rapidly, causing it to mask the enemy from the accelerating Washington as it pass on the SD port...

Re: Operation C
... To try to answer your questions: the only real difference would have been made by adding several fleet carriers. With only HMS Illustrious available, carrying some 45 warplanes, Sommerville would still have been badly out-matched by the Japanese 5 fleet carriers operating together, plus the ind...
