Re: Kongo Class: Fast Battleship or Battlecruiser

Well the US created Iowa to counter the Kongo class because the Kongos were so fast compare to the other US Battleships at the time. Even the faster of battleships could make only 27 knots compare to Kongo's 30 and the Standards were even worse at only 21 knots each. As such , the Iowa created the I...

Kongo Class: Fast Battleship or Battlecruiser

Warning: This post is just my opinion and my opinion only. I am not a naval historian nor do I intend to make myself appear as one. I am just some guy with a post idea in his head. You have been warned, so don’t get too triggered. Sleek. Fast. Powerful. The main reason why Iowa was ever created. And...

Re: Alaska Class: Battlecruise or Large Cruiser Semi-debate

The Alaskas were built to counter a rumored Japanese super cruiser project that could hunt down their own heavy cruisers and carriers. They also built the Alaskas to hunt down any enemy cruiser while being able to speed away from anything powerful enough to sink it head on. The Scharn Twins (WW2 not...

Re: Alaska Class: Battlecruise or Large Cruiser Semi-debate

Ehhhh....debatable. Including only ships built at the time and in the European Theater, the only ships that were faster than the Deustchland class were the British battlecruisers. Most battleships could only reach a top speed of 24knots while the Deustchs could go 28knots. But yeah, the battlecruise...

Re: Alaska Class: Battlecruise or Large Cruiser Semi-debate

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah I too feel like the Schanrhorst class were not that much based on the D class. I feel like they were based more on the eariler battlecruiser design of the Ersatz Yorck class. They had similar, length, tonnage and even the names are similar. But maybe that last one is ...

Re: Alaska Class: Battlecruise or Large Cruiser Semi-debate

The ships you refer to were the D and P classes. They had the same firepower, greater speed and with the D class better armour compare to the earlier Panzerschiffs.

Re: Jutland 100 years ago

She also was wrong when she said that Seydlitz and Queen Mary had similar protection and firepower. QM had better firepower than the German battlecruiser, but Seydlitz had much better armour. And while QM could survive the damage Seydiltz received, would she've tooken more damage from German fire, c...

Re: Worst Battlecruiser of WW1 and WW2

I think the term we use is Battlecruiser. And I think it fits the Alaska class well. I've already did a link about why I think the Alaskas were BCs, not CAs, and I don't feel the real urge to repost it again. WW1: Design-wise: The Corageous class. ABout the same size as the Invincible class of 1906...

Re: Worst Battlecruiser of WW1 and WW2

HMS Furious was a half sister to the HMS Courageous. She was used as a test bed for aircraft and was eventually converted into a full carrier. If built as intended, she would be terrible. Like her half sisters, she weighted about 22000 tonnes and could reach very high speeds of 31 knots. However she...

Re: Battlecruisers: Flawed or not?

Well, at the very least they wouldn't get the bad undeserved rep they have right now. If the 3 BCs at Jutland didnt blow up, chances are the more navies would build more BCs after WT.

Re: Battlecruisers: Flawed or not?

IMO Jutland did not show the flaws of battlecruisers in general. It showed the flaws of 'british' battlecruisers in terms of how they were used. Coup with dangerous handling f explosives, and you've got trouble. German BCs achieved successes as they were designed with this type of mission in mind, t...

Re: Battlecruisers: Flawed or not?

Make that D class. The Duetsch class had one problem that might hiner their performance. The speed. 28 knots means that they could be caught up by fast BBs and BCs. The D class with better speed would solve this problem. Then there is the O Class BCs which were, in my theory, actualy designed by the...

Re: Battlecruisers: Flawed or not?

Well Hood could've had the role of making sure that german cruisers dont go into the Atlantic and disrupt the convoys, as well as Renown, with speed and firepower. Hood was just placed in a situation she should never have been in the first place: pitting in line of battle against a battleship 20 yea...
