Re: Some questions about the battle at the Denmark Strait

Hello everybody, Bill Jurens wrote: "...insisting on a binary "yes' or "no" response simply renders the entire exercise futile..." Therefore, if you and some others " fellow contributors " consider the exercise "futile", just don't come in this thread and stay in your "indeterminateness". That's it...

Re: Some questions about the battle at the Denmark Strait

Hello everybody, for the second time no answer yet to Mr.Rico's questions 3 and 4 from a forum member who prefers to comment: "there we have it: Simon and Garfunkel versus Bonomi and Virtuani. Once again, the indeterminate nature of this exercise arises." ...well, no. Simon and Garfunkel vs emperor...

Re: Did any of Hoods Survivors ever meet Bismarck Survivors?

I am wondering if any of the Hoods 3 survivors ever met any of the Bismarcks survivors in person. What were their feelings towards each other? Did Ted Briggs ever meet and speak to Rechberg? I am sure they knew who each other were. A quick check of the interweb suggests that there has been a long (...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

My thanks to those who have offered suggestions, etc. Often (one might say, usually) the best way to lead is to listen. I would agree that there is essentially zero probability of the opposing viewpoints, one -- at least by my reading -- being that a fairly definitive history has already been creat...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Gentlemen, This topic is going the same way as 'PoW's readiness for active service' and other topics before it, Is it not time to shut this one down as well as we appear to be going in circles without any definite points being made and no definite conclusions arrived at with only increasingly hosti...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

I was away from the computer on a brief vacation over the past few days, so have let daily commentary and moderation slip. This happens from time to time. Having skimmed the previous few day's submissions, although I would say that many comments approached the line of acceptability, none of the inf...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Fellow Contributors, I believe earlier in this very thread Mr Jurens said he could not see what was to be gained from withholding material from these reports. I am a bit confused about Mr. Virtuani's statements along the lines of "All the records will be released and published in a couple of years....

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

It appears that Churchill wanted to go after Somerville and Lancelot Holland for dereliction of duty after Cape Spartivento. LOL. B And Cunningham whilst he was dealing with the French naval forces based in Alexandra after the fall of France. Churchill was the archetypal armchair admiral. And quite...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Hello everybody, of course a ship with 10 guns (6 fore) has a salvo theoretically composed by more shots than a 8 guns ship... Dunmunro wrote: "Hood was probably firing two gun salvos" ...only when PoW was firing 3 guns salvos. After 5:58, 4 (Hood) to 5 (PoW) guns salvos (arcs open for both ships)....

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Byron Angel wrote: "HMS Lion - Jutland....1.45 salvoes per minute." Therefore much less than the 2 salvoes per minute of PoW (at least if they were salvos and not broadsides...). Range, please ? You missed the bit about firing in pair concentration with Princess Royal; nevertheless, probably a poor...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

At least in the USN, the most valid comparison of rate of fire was usually taken to be Shots Per Gun Per Minute (SPGPM). Usually, in target practices, no discrimination was made regarding the reasons behind missed shots although in unusual situations some discrimination might be made between shots ...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Hello everybody, "PoW was basically firing at a rate of one round per gun per minute. This cannot be deemed either a fast or excellent rate of fire..." A clear disagreement with Adm.Santarini (for whom the PoW RoF was " excellent ")... : which examples of actual comparable battles do we have in whi...

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

Hi Byron, While not disputing your statement in any way, there were (I believe) many occasions during the war when certain 'occurrences were not made public and relatives were only told that someone had 'died in action' or some other excuse. I was watching a documentary about the ramming of a cruis...

Re: Old men's memories

I was witness to a shot-gun style murder many years ago, and attempted to assist the victim. Many memories. Many police photographs. Years later, met a woman who's brother was one of the police officers involved, and who -- probably somewhat unethically -- arranged to show me some of the photos of ...
