Re: HMS Hood survivors positions during action & enquiry reports

Hello everybody, Dundas told to the first board (http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/official/adm116/adm116-4351_to59.htm) he was in Compass Platform at the explosion time. Briggs (http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/official/adm116/adm116-4351_Hood.htm#Briggs) was within the Compass Platform as we...

HMS Hood survivors positions during action & enquiry reports

Hi all, Does anybody know that when HMS Hoods loss enquiries were performed whether a diagram, models or pictures was used to point out exactly where Briggs,Dundas and Tilburn were located at the time of the fatal hit and the subsequent minutes? I must have read their accounts a thousand times but I'...

Re: PoW shell splash

the splash is obviously from PoW local salvo 20 (as Mr.Rico confirmed). Yes, from PoW, but to which salvo it belongs is debatable. Hi Mr Rico! Dumb question. Does that mean that out of shot there would be another shell splash (or another 2 or 3 depending on the salvo fired)? Best wishes HMSVF

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hello everybody, HMSVF wrote: "Is it irrelevant though?" Yes it is, of course ONLY in the calculation of the average actual RoF that would have been exactly the same had all PoW guns fired perfectly (0% output loss) or just half of them had been in action (50% output loss). This figure only impacts...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hello everybody, HMSVF wrote: "is this based on on the remaining 74% ?" Yes, correct but only for # shells delivered /minute and effective RoF. For actual RoF the output loss is irrelevant. Of course KGV (as well as Nelson) class ships were "designed" to deliver more shells than a ship with 8 guns....

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hello everybody, Dunmunro wrote: "that means that Bismarck was scoring hits at the rate of about 3/min on PoW" Wrong. Bismarck scored hits between minute 6:00 and minute 6:02, therefore 1.5 hit per minute, that is very high, but absolutely not impossible in such a situation, where the range was bec...

Hello everybody, ignoring the provocations and the (already explained) errors in calculating average values proposed above, Bill Jurens wrote: " One can know what's wrong, without knowing what's right." ..and what's wrong, please ? Hello everybody, northcape wrote: "It is an arithmetic mean, but the arithmetic mean is just a number which in this case does not tell anything about the effectiveness of fire" Correct. Means values are what we are trying to calculate (despite a huge resistance). All the other parameters (including...

Re: PoW readiness for active service

A different spin on the Leach cover-up debate: it is my opinion that Leach succumbed to pressure from higher-ups to prematurely declare PoW ready for active service. B Evening, As I mentioned on the other thread I think the pressures of the time led to her deployment. The cupboard in fast battleshi...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Gentlemen, I wonder if we might look at this in a slightly different light as to the actual blame sometimes directed at Capt Leach and place it at a much higher authority - the RN and the senior officers who ordered Hood and PoW to intercept Bismarck. Here we have an old battlecruiser with known we...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hello everybody, we are speaking now about subjective judgements and not facts, like the geometrical reconstruction of the battle or the subsequent evident "embellishment" of the story. However, IMHO, if you have a mission (prevent Bismarck from raiding in Atlantic) and, while engaged, you see that...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hello everybody, I have already said that the judgement over Leach, Wake-Walker and Ellis as soldiers is largely subjective, and we should here concentrate on facts and evidences instead. However: HMSVF wrote: "Leach made the right decision full stop. " I would not be so categorical. Had he insiste...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hi Paul, I agree with most of your your above considerations. I also said that Leach's decision to disengage was the good one with hindsight . His decision to break off the engagement with " superficial damages " only, at the very time he took it, was however very different from what was (and still...
