Re: The War Diary of the Battleship Bismarck

A revised edition of the war diary of the Bismarck has been uploaded to the website. Lots of typos that went unnoticed years ago have now been corrected, and the translation has been improved overall. You may download the new updated document for free from the following link: http://www.kbismarck.co...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Do you think it can be a high explosive 5,25" shell fired in local control by a secondary turret of PoW (according to Leach narrative, the HALA directors were all temporarily out of action or unable to take over the control at that time, but there is no explicit mention to a "cease fire" of the 5,2...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

The difference is that the water column in "Hood 1" is still gaining height, while the 2 splashes on the right are already falling down. The "black color" that you mention for "Hood 1" is a grey shade on the left side of the splash but it is actually white on the right side (it just difuminates with...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

http://www.kbismarck.org/forum/download/file.php?id=3113 If my opinion is of any value... "Hood 1" is not a flaw in the print as has been suggested, however, it does not originate from Hood either. "Hood 1" is much closer to the camera than "Hood 2". "Hood 1" is in fact a single shell splash and it...

Re: Otto Ulli Signal?

OK, I see.
So, I guess OU refers to the type of message, like SSD (Sehr, Sehr, Dringend = Very Very Urgent).

Re: Otto Ulli Signal?

Thanks for that Marc,
But since most "Otto Ulli" signals have something to do with the Ark Royal, couldn't be a coded signal for launching aircraft?
Check this:

Re: Otto Ulli Signal?

B-Dienst certainly knew what "Otto Ulli" stood for. It is one of several code words used by the Germans during Rheinübung. BTW Cleethorpes is not a ship but a powerful RN naval radio transmission site called New Waltham Wireless Station on the east coast of UK. Cleethorpes is the nearest town to it ...

Otto Ulli Signal?

Hello all, I am currently revising the whole war diary of the Bismarck, correcting typos, improving the translation, etc, and perhaps someone can help me with this. Any idea what kind of signal was "Otto Ulli" ?? I believe it has something to do with air operations but can't say for sure. Here are a...

Prinz Eugen Medical Report

Ulrich Rudofsky translated this document many years ago, but for some reason it was never uploaded to the website.
Here it is now, Prinz Eugen medical report from 18.5.1941 to 1.6.1941.

Re: Prinz Eugen torpedo missed launch at DS

Antonio,
What is actually the point of starting this thread? As the title suggests it should be to discuss the deployment of Prinz Eugen's torpedo battery during the engagement with Hood/PoW, right?

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

Hood took about 3 minutes to sink. She was moving at ~1000 yds/min when the magazine exploded. Hood's speed would have declined rapidly as she sank, but not instantaneously, and she probably moved forward about ~500 yds/min average for the 3 minutes or so before she sank. Hood took about 3 minutes ...

Leach is being castigated for altering course when under the combined fire of 8 x 38cm, 8 x 20.3cm, 6 x 15cm, and 14 x 10.5cm guns (and after being hit by 3 x 38cm and 4 x 20.3cm shells) and the threat of 4 x TTs. Yet Brinkman (under no fire at all) and Lutjens alter course due to imaginary torpedo...
