Re: Hits on PoW and Bismarck

Wadinga & Antonio, Just for your information. The map attached below is basically a carbon copy of the map published by Russell Grenfell in 1948 "The Bismarck Episode". I have no idea why this old map was reproduced in Brennecke's 2003 book edition, that is five years after the author passed away, b...

Re: Hits on PoW and Bismarck

Marc, I'm not familiar with the damage control report you mention (reconstructed?), but how could the men at Group West know exactly where the Bismarck was hit other than from the information provided by Lütjens' radio messages and the later testimony of survivors? Survivor Otto Höntzsch reported th...

Re: hits on PoW and Bismarck

The official statement is „exit above armor deck“, which is the upper platform deck in this area. The big hole is on the tween deck. Therefore it can‘t be from PoW. Well, the tween and battery decks are also over the armor deck (über Panzerdeck), right? 1. Upper deck 2. Battery deck 3. Tween deck 4...

Re: hits on PoW and Bismarck

Bill, In the following link we can see that the entry and exit holes, port and starboard, are both over the false white waves: http://www.hmshood.com/hoodtoday/2001expedition/bismarck/bismarck5.htm That would indicate an angle very close to 270º (i.e zero degrees), unless the holes don't belong to t...

Who is the observer?

Hello all, The following paragraph is from Müllenheim-Rechberg's book: Another observer, on duty in the charthouse as an assistant to Korvettenkapitän Wolf Neuendorff, the navigator, described what he saw: " 'Straddling', boomed out of the loudspeaker. I was standing with Kapitän Neuendorff in front...

Re: Prinz Eugen firing procedures at DS

One of the problems I believe we should address is to decouple reload interval from firing interval. All navies and all ships spent considerable time designing loading systems and drilling to reduce reload time to the lowest value time in seconds compatible with reliable operation. Prinz Eugen's gu...

Re: Prinz Eugen firing procedures at DS

Obviously, the initial salvos fired by Prinz Eugen starting at 0555 hours took more than 27-28 seconds to reach their target. At 20,000 meters the flight time of the German 20.3cm projectile was 35-36 seconds. Flight times of 28 seconds are only obtained once the distance has gone down to about 16,5...

Well, apart from the threat of a comedy book from A & A in the future ...
Please don't try to divert a new discussion towards something that has nothing to do with it. Just stay on topic.
This goes to all.
Thanks.

Did anybody get the book already?
It's now available in Amazon, and after reading a couple of reviews there. it seems it is much better than the previous edition.

Re: The War Diary of the Battleship Bismarck

A revised edition of the war diary of the Bismarck has been uploaded to the website. Lots of typos that went unnoticed years ago have now been corrected, and the translation has been improved overall. You may download the new updated document for free from the following link: http://www.kbismarck.co...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Do you think it can be a high explosive 5,25" shell fired in local control by a secondary turret of PoW (according to Leach narrative, the HALA directors were all temporarily out of action or unable to take over the control at that time, but there is no explicit mention to a "cease fire" of the 5,2...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

The difference is that the water column in "Hood 1" is still gaining height, while the 2 splashes on the right are already falling down. The "black color" that you mention for "Hood 1" is a grey shade on the left side of the splash but it is actually white on the right side (it just difuminates with...
