Saludos, yes, you have found the answers. English weights and measures were based on the Roman ones, hence the usage of the appellation "Imperial", not just because of the later British Empire. The same for the pre-Decimal currency being based on the Roman one. 12d (Denarius) Copper Coins ...

Chel Sea: I was about to write that the Napier Sabre was not the most powerfull engine put into a single engine aircraft, but after reviewing the data I was just amazed. It had "just" a 36.6 Litres displacement, but the sea level power went from 2000 hp in the MkI to 3055 hp in the MkVII....

Re: ....bismarck screws....

well i do know that a piper senaca, PA-34 which is a light twin, has counter rotating props.....and it was designed that way to eliminate torque, especially on take-off. I know that this is late in the day (of this thread), but just to confirm your point vis a vis avionics and torque, the Hawker se...

Tiornu: So what happens when the pocket battleships break into the Atlantic and encounter Patton and MacArthur? What's the immune zone for MacArthur's cranium? :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: I think he was trying to get back onto topic, since we took it to Mars or somewhere like th...

Karl: Great post. You are right about WWI being in the mind of UK Generals, like FM Sir Douglas "Butcher" Haig and all that. I can't get over the fact that Monty was a Tasmanian, maybe I should by now... as I say the UK press had a lot to do with his later pain in the neck'ness. The UK pre...

I'm not aware of any US officer who liked Montgomery. And I'm not aware of Montgomery liking any US officer (although he did respect Patton's abilities as a commander) I think with Omar Bradley he had a point though, anyway, it was all mutual between the two of them. Then again even Omar had no res...

Here, I think I found the exact quote: "Only a pimp in a New Orleans whorehouse or a tin-horn gambler would carry a pearl-handled pistol." Typical Blood 'n' Guts Patton. Ironic thing is that just earlier on this morning watching the History channel and that WWII in Colour documentary, aga...

EDIT: BTW forgot to say that Patton was also the only Allied general that the Germans feared/respected.

Karl has pretty much beat me to it, apart from these: Blood and Guts Patton was minted as we say in London, he came from a very rich family, he did'nt give a damn what they thought or said at Staff, even what FDR said, his family was usually richer than theirs anyway, that for one rubbed many up the...

The movie U-571 was total crap. Agreed. What a stupid piece of junk! The real shame is most people who saw it wouldn't know that. I love the trailer with Harvey Keitel saying "Everything is in German!", duur, your mission is to capture a German sub, QED... I'm surpised because Har...

You know, you rarely if ever meet a Dutchman who jokes about dykes (the fixed landlocked ones of course). Not because it's not a laughing matter, but because it's really an English tale. One major difference with Britain is that our army was easily swept aside and the Netherlands are a lot smaller ...

Hi Chel Sea. The Re-built QE's certainly were splendid ships. The RE-built Tennessee's were equally as good and maybe the 16" gunned WeeVee stands out with the heavier main battery. But I do believe that the Re-built US ships had better AA weaponary and by late WW2, that is what counted. By th...

Without them we would be the largerst seapower on earth and you would probably be speaking Dutch You are right that the Dutch gave the UK the impetus for the Navy since Cromwell's Republic. The were the best ships (the Dutch) packed with the most up to date technology in Sail even down to the intri...

QE History World War Two During World War II, she was part of the Mediterranean Fleet. She was mined and sunk by an Italian human torpedo attack on 18 December 1941 in shallow water in the harbour at Alexandria, Egypt. Although low in the water, her decks were clear and the Italian crews were captu...
