I think not, just push button steering, must be boring for the helmsman. In the Uboats even the horizontal rudders where so, with a wheeled mechanical backup.

Re: 3-shaft propulsion
In a very general sense, one larger propeller turning slowly will be more efficient than any larger number of propellers turning more rapidly. The optimum number of propellers, and their size, is largely driven by issues of geometry -- draft is limited after all -- and the perceived need for redund...

German light cruisers design: the aft turrets
Hi guys. An old question, which is the reason for the light German cruisers being built with two turrets aft?

Re: Blucher in Dogger Bank
I own at least ten books by Friedman, starting with his first work, “Battleship Design and Development 1905-1945” published all the way back in 1978. However, my opinion of Friedman has unfortunately rather diminished over recent years. He seems to have developed (IMO) a serious case of compulsive ...

Put it more simple, a bolt action rifle has dispersion.

Re: Corsair in the War Zone
It seems there was more than one Corsair taken into service. One for the Spanish-American war, and this one for First World War, both owned by Morgan. Looking carefully at the pict, she does not seem to be a fast ship under sail, the masts look pretty short to extend much canvas, the booms do not lo...

Re: KMS BLUCHER
As a general point looking at the chart it seems that iron and steel strengthen with small heat increases, so small fires would not be effective in unsettling the ship? However would the heat increase not expand the metal creating weaknesses there, such as bending or warping? Well, I took a graphic...

Re: Pom pom with director Mk IV vs Bofors 40mm with Mk 51
[ Take a look at the Kerrison Predictor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerrison_Predictor In your example the two predicted target locations would vary enough that no hits could be expected on the further target unless target's actual course was modelled accurately. Didn´t know that device, thanks ...

Re: KMS BLUCHER
Thor managed to sink HMS Voltaire with gunfire alone, this is worth noting as Thor's guns were peashooters compared with the armament of light cruisers. Its often overlooked that the broadside of a hilfskreuzer was half that of a light cruiser, yet look at the damage Kormoran did to HMAS Sydney in ...

Re: Pom pom with director Mk IV vs Bofors 40mm with Mk 51
Tachymetric analog computers could predict target location accurately given accurate inputs; that was the whole point of it all. Where the computers failed was when the TOF was too long and the target's predicted location would no longer match it's actual location, due to target manoeuvring. Look a...

Re: Pom pom with director Mk IV vs Bofors 40mm with Mk 51
Yes, I f you have a continuous range to the target , via radar, then it's possible to accurately predict the target's location at the end of the projectile's TOF, but only if target motion is accurately modeled. I think that that is beyond the possibilities of the technology of the day. Somehow you...

Re: KMS BLUCHER
Old rule, it is difficult to sink a ship by gunfire alone. For sure the torpedoes were the main culprit.
