Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

Gentlemen, Please forgive my interruption to your debate, but perhaps you could clear up a couple of points for me. First of all, are some people saying that Y turret did not jam at all? If so, how could anyone in the RN get away with saying they did when there were so many witnesses on the ship, n...

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

Hello everybody, well, ... we have just learned that the KG V class battleships have never been really completed, ... not having had in their service life the quadruple turrets and relative gun loading mechanisms working at an acceptable reliability level, ... Neither KGV nor PoW had a chan...

Yet A/A tell us that their RoF was glacially slow and only capable of 93 rounds over 14 minutes, even when all 8 x 38cm guns can bear on the target.

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Note how Rowell doesn't state that Hood and PoW opened fire and then Bismarck did nothing for two minutes... It's time we use the data and tell the real story, instead of a fantasy where the cowardly Lutjens freezes on the bridge. The very idea that PoW actually fired 4 or 5 salvos before Bi...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

I don't think Campbell wrote a book (if he has I can't find it and it would be no doubt an excellent read), I got his account from the Baron's book where it was said: There is a Campbell that wrote books on battleship guns and other naval weapons. I don't know if it is the same Campbell? The author...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Hello All, despite all the errors in the Norfolk GAR (timings and distances) There can be nothing wrong with Norfolk's rangefinder distance, within the limitations of the system . Fabricated courses, positions and speeds can't compete with real measurements. As for the time I suspect the timing on ...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

I'm actually greatly enjoying everyone's comments here as it's proving to be very detailed with a lot of interesting information. Thanks guys! So given the ranges and the angles involved, short of the shells hitting the prow of the ship and penetrating inwards, deck hits could in some probability s...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Norfolk didn't open fire but if she did, she would have fired a salvo.

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

I think you are looking at diagram of hit no3... The one in question is hit no4. Yes hit 4 (section K). The diagram for hit 4 is below the diagram for hit 3. I measure 624 pixels for the hull side to the edge of the semi-section and 416 pixels for the length of the arrow so if 624px = 15m then 416p...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

If the semi-section is 15 meters then the arrows representing the shell path are 9.3 and 10 meters (upper and lower) respectively from armour belt to point of burst. It is obvious that the arrows are about 2/3 the semi-section width. Remember that length begins at the armour belt, not the hull plat...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

The drawing is an exact semi-section of the ship at boiler 21. Beam was 30meters, thus semi section 15meters. You need to calculate the trajectory length, not it's horizontal projection to rhe deck. For impact I worked with 480m/s capped 6crh shell of 1940 vintage versus 9inch plate at 20 deg (tota...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

As a closing thought on the subject, HMS HOOD's 15" guns scored a remarkable hit against French Dunkerque at Mers-el-Kebyr in 1940: the 4th hit obtained on the French battlecruiser struck the main belt (225mm thick incline at 15deg), from 17500yards (probable impact velocity 480m/s or 1584 feet/s),...

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

This film clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPmkOtSveXY&t=340s shows single RN shell splashes at 05:58 and 06:16 (film time) and shows Bismarck's forward turrets on an extreme aft bearing. However it is not until 06:49 that we see PoW alone, but not yet having passed the smoke from Hood's explos...
