Re: KGV + PoW

So I do have a somewhat odd question. Could Bismarck be considered lightly armed for her size? 8x15" seems kind of few especially when we consider what say the RM or the USN were packing which was 9x15/16" respectively while being nearly 100ft shorter (Veneto class, SD class, North Carolina class, ...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

   Rowell declaration at board: 42. In your Captain's report of the action it is stated that "Hood" opened fire at 0552 1/2 and that she blew up at 0600. As you probably assisted in making this report, can you tell us if these times are accurate or not? They were complied on the foll...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Regarding the old and stale speculation about Hood sunk before 6:00, here is exhibit B at the second board, signed by ....GWRowell (http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/official/adm234/234509encIVb.gif) ExhibitB.jpg Hood explosion is marked at what time ? Whose is the signature?   By...

Re: Anson and Tirpitz

Gentlemen, I have taken a post from Alecsandros in the Bismark & Tirpitz myth and planted it here (hope you don't mind Alecsandros). 'KGV displaced 37500 tons standard and Bismarck 41700 tons standard. Yes, Bismarck was heavier , but not in the proportion usually considered. Tirpitz weighed 44200 t...

Re: KGV + PoW

The KGV class displacement data was carefully recorded by the Admiralty whereas Bismarck's data has not been so conveniently available. Hence the revised figures over the years. I am fully confident in Mr Rico's figures and I'm sure that most board members accept them as correct. But are you confid...

Re: KGV + PoW

The data on Kbismarck.com for Bismarck's weight has been arrived at after years of study by Mr Rico and has to be given a lot more consideration than earlier figures by Koop and G&D. The same consideration needs to be applied to KGV displacement, and having the same authors publishing the two books...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Hello, Hmm yes, there is a difference, what I'm trying to say is that perhaps to explain the odd number of shells fired, Bismarck's guns were having problems at some point during the battle thus leading to that number. Thanks for the links, so we can summarize the following as: Rowell: 3-4 salvos b...

Re: KGV + PoW

Tirpitz also gained weight due to additions - radars, AAA guns, ammo, men, etc. see here: https://www.bismarck-class.dk/technicallayout/bismarck_vs_tirpitz/bismarck_vs_tirpitz.html a more detailed description of weights of Bismarck. see empty ship = 39931 tons; see type displacement = 42343 tons*. ...

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

Gentlemen, Please forgive my interruption to your debate, but perhaps you could clear up a couple of points for me. First of all, are some people saying that Y turret did not jam at all? If so, how could anyone in the RN get away with saying they did when there were so many witnesses on the ship, n...

Hello everybody, well, ... we have just learned that the KG V class battleships have never been really completed, ... not having had in their service life the quadruple turrets and relative gun loading mechanisms working at an acceptable reliability level, ... Neither KGV nor PoW had a chan...

Yet A/A tell us that their RoF was glacially slow and only capable of 93 rounds over 14 minutes, even when all 8 x 38cm guns can bear on the target.

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Note how Rowell doesn't state that Hood and PoW opened fire and then Bismarck did nothing for two minutes... It's time we use the data and tell the real story, instead of a fantasy where the cowardly Lutjens freezes on the bridge. The very idea that PoW actually fired 4 or 5 salvos before Bi...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

I don't think Campbell wrote a book (if he has I can't find it and it would be no doubt an excellent read), I got his account from the Baron's book where it was said: There is a Campbell that wrote books on battleship guns and other naval weapons. I don't know if it is the same Campbell? The author...
