Re: American SH shells - Famed or Folly

The 2700 lb'er needs 94% of the velocity of the 2100 lb shell for the same penetration despite the much greater momentum. So therefore for the same charge the lighter shell will have quite a large margin not just in velocity but in penetrion too. F = MV squared Just as in boxing, speed kills quicke...

Re: Tirpitz sails on part of Rheinubung

The reason that Bismarck, Tirpitz and Prinz Eugen can be considered as more worked up is perhaps due to their role in the war. They were never intended to be put into service to defend German trade convoys from Royal Navy attack, their role was the polar opposite, it was to attack the British trade...

Re: Tirpitz sails on part of Rheinubung

I woudl like to see some sort of ban or kick working on the forum... Maybe Jose can help ? It gets extremely boring and tiresome when someone simply refuses to read (and openly acknoledges that !) just to keep his previous made-up prejudice about some things/ships/situations. It's realy a waste of ...

Re: May 24 1941 - Tirpitz v Prince of Wales

Alex, Tirpitz failed gunnery trials some weeks after May 24th 1941. It was sent back to the yard. POW was vastly more prepared for battle than was Tirpitz on May 24th 1941. Aha thanks, I always wondered. You hear about POW being a green ship. The mechanical difficulties were the greater problem, Wh...

Aha see I always wondered why the very few illustrations I found of ST showed her looking like a big 3 decker

Re: Tirpitz sails on part of Rheinubung

How much longer had POW to work up to better crew efficiency, than Tirpitz? The POW "...only being completed in late March 1941..." Given the severe mechanical difficulties suffered by the POW, I would almost rate her a 'green' ship. Save that when her guns worked, they were very well serv...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood

Great posts, many thanks. I'd be very interested to hear about the results of any of the more exhaustive rules miniatures/wargames dealing with alternate DS scenarios like these. For instance the relatively detailed Avalon Hill Bismarck designed by Jack Greene (which if I recall correctly was based ...

Re: 38 cm and 15 cm sound

There was a very popular series of music albums (you know, the old vinyl records lol) of music from the old television series Victory at Sea. The third album had (supposedly) genuine recordings of 16 inch gunfire, as well as anti-aircraft fire. I used to love that album. You can probably find it on ...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood

I would be very interested to know the true extent of the KGV's difficulties in the final battle. On the one hand you read there was major trouble, on the other not so much. It still seems obvious the Rodney did most of the work. ... AFAIK, King George fired first salvo from ~ 23km on radar guidanc...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood

DOY vs SH was an entirely different situation. By that point the Brits had had sufficient time to correct the teething trouble with the armament layout, etc. Plus SH was not merely running away from DOY. She was running away from a small fleet, with DOY as the main opponent. And it was an 8" ro...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood

But could 14", 15", and 16" armaments deliver quick knock out blows against equally modern opponents barring short battle ranges? SH could do just as much outside the citadel damage with its 11"ers as could the larger guns. The problem at the time of DS, or probably even a few m...

I commend you on your dedication to accuracy in this venture.

Do you have a cover illustration yet? I have done some illustration for wargames in the past & would be very interested in working with you.
