Re: Hits on PoW and Bismarck

I made also a visualisation of the E-Werk hit uncertainty of UW trajectiory has to be observed. projectile probably hit the static wave trough generated by shipmovement the 12,5 m distance is determined by the likely arming distance for the british fuze as the projectile detonated at contact with th...

More importantly, there was a loss of more than 1000 tons of precious fuel. Fuel tanks had been contaminated by seawater, and the fuel distribution system forward had been seriously damaged. the projectile obviously damaged all watertight walls on its way through the ship my conclusion from descrip...

Re: Yamato Instead of Kirishima 13th Nov 1942

My take is the Japanese had better observation of the destroyers and targeted them, leaving the two BB outside the clusters of torpedo tracks. The Japanese were 100% dependent of visual observation and the slightly closer destroyers may have been clearly identified first, leading to them as the aim...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Regarding the POW salvo plot
this chart contains distances, but these distances are not the distance as measured by the rangefinders, but the distance of the expected shell travel from the firing solution.

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

So Campbell's account said that Bismarck's 3rd salvo from the fore turrets, just before Rodney obtained 1-2 hit(s) on them to take them out of action achieved a 'perfect straddle' with shells landing, fore, aft and to both sides. In short, he seems to have described the shells as almost hitting but...

Re: Scharnhorst w/ 38cm's and other improvements

its my opinion that decapping was a new feature to the Kriegsmarine in 1935/36 but well established in about 1938/39.

I could find a armor schemes for H-Class and also for P class cruisers using a decapping plate + main FH armor plate for vertical protection.

Re: Scharnhorst w/ 38cm's and other improvements

One wonders where the 350mm number comes from if not original docs (alternate version?). From Erich Gröner "Die deutschen Kriegsschiffe 1815-1945". During WW2 he was responsible for type recognition foreign marines. In a early stadium of construction 350 mm was primarily choosen. But weight restric...

Re: British v German rangefinders

for Germany the optical rangefinders at least on the capital ships were triaxially stabilised. A feature wich was recommended by NavTecMisEur also for use on american ships.

Few little things regarding reliability of timing of PoW -- My problems with wording and timing POW 05:37 Enemy sighted range 38000 Yard The rangefinders failed to develop a satisfactory range plot before opening fire KTB PG enemy sighted at 05:50 at 30 km obviously an excellent performance on the b...

I see what you are saying and meaning. Whether report for the time says north westerly winds - force 4 (means 5-7,9 m/s) this is almost right angle to the course of the ship once a puff of smoke is released and lost ist initial propagation velocity, hes driving with the wind 10 seconds after shoting...
