Re: Regarding Hood at DS : a new article

Their magazines and shell rooms were transposed from Hood, a significant alteration. There was good reason for this major alteration. what was the reason? The Germans went the other way: They explicitely decide to retain the powder chambers above the shell rooms with the Linienschiff 1913(Baden) de...

Between 22000 and 31000yd, KGV immune while Tirpitz vulnerable to 14" deck hits. This recommendation was overtaken past 1945/46 when the protective value of the german horizontal protection(50 mm + 80 mm) was evaluated with about 6 ". No british naval gun/shell in service at this time cou...

even this is from Preston "All the communications, electical power, telemotor leads and boiler uptakes were above the low-armored deck, and enemy gunfire had shredded everything except the main machinery within minutes." The power supply of the ship was made from 4 independent main circuit...

Re: Alaska Class vs Dunkquerke Class

Dunkerque had a large unprotected bow. Even the relatively much smaller forward spaces of Bismarck cause considerable problems by flooding, when riddled, despite extensive compartmentalisation.

Re: Bismarck and Iowa

im not sure about "consistently scoring hits" as the KTB from the Admiral Kanalküste mostly states "Erfolg nicht beobachtet" -"success not observed", except you have informations about gunfire damage on british ships available. sample 0266.jpg but as a result, these sho...

Re: Bismarck and Iowa

scoring hits at such ranges due to ballistic reasons

another problem is the flight time

at 25 km fligthtimes of shells are in the order of 40+ seconds
at 30 km round about 55+ seconds.

Ample of time for the target to change course.

Re: Jasper, Schmalenbach and 6 salvos...

Exactly ! For example, did you know that in reality HMS Hood opened fire from 290hm ? It's written in Prinz Eugen's war diary - it can't be mistaken for sure. This could be a numbers twist. Possibly 209 hm =20,9 km wich is roughly 24 k Yard. And the 290 hm number possibly refers to the first detect...

What an arrogant response, totally over the top and totally unnecessary. Sorry it was not my Intention to sound arrogant or harsh. I dont know the "Millington-Drakes compendium". So it would be useful for me to get more details. Your additional information has some vague but possib...

Re: Bismarck immunity zone

hits against turrets and barbettes likely cause shock damage and requires immediate and accurate evaluation. When doubts arose, about the further viability, the equipment concerned, was not used until dockyard inspection. As happend with South Dakota. They didnt use the turret, wich was hit but not ...

Re: Hood v Vittorio Veneto

The one test of this is the River Plate battle. Neither Ajax or Achilles suffered any purely internal shell bursts from 11 inch shells. Said who? Did you have Damage reports? Hit for hit evaluation? Something that looks like this https://goo.gl/photos/iqvcj7pG4ESLWQiU6 https://goo.gl/photos/iqvcj7p...

would the armour piercing shells have gone straight through the lightly armoured cruisers? probably no. The Germans explicitly recommended the use of armor piercing shells as well as semi armor piercing shells(Psgr m Bdz and also Spgr mBdz) against light cruisers despite "paper like" armo...

Re: Increasing Bismarck's Armor By 50% Would Make a Difference?

A 145mm Ww inner bulkhead as opposed to the 45mm Ww bulkhead may have helped stop the splinters, but the question remains what the side effects would have been in terms of protection from torpedoes and mines. The 110 mm protective plating of the rudder compartment completely withstood the explosive...
