Re: PoW, Bismarck, Vittorio Veneto Torpedo Hits

Thanks for the clarification Kevin. Re: PoW, Bismarck, Vittorio Veneto Torpedo Hits

As to your question if PoW had not have received further damage could she have reached safety, that would depend on if Repulse had also survived as a tow would probably have been necessary, the crew quite probably could have stopped further flooding, may have been able to have the time to repair th...

Re: PoW, Bismarck, Vittorio Veneto Torpedo Hits

Hello all, PoW and VV's hits are in remarkably similar locations, and both ended up with severe flooding and were down by the stern. But I suspect PoW's was worse when the damaged shaft was restarted and "drilled" out a pathway for further major flooding. So my question is: If PoW had rece...

Re: 'New' Photo of Bismarck on the Elbe

Thanks Jose', yes I see it now. But this "new" photo of Bismarck reminded me of a photo I saw of Hood and demonstrates the awe-inspiring sight that both ships were to their respective countrymen and women! Quite the parallel! https://eisenbahnstiftung.de/images/bildergalerie/82918.jpg http...

Re: 'New' Photo of Bismarck on the Elbe

Also, if I remember correctly there is a similar photo in Ballard's book. Yes, it's a small one on page 20 taken from the port side though, captioned "The Bismarck on her trials in November 1940" but I suspect that should be September. Regarding Johnny Horton's song, as Kevin said, hardly...

Re: British submarines' torpedo hits compared to German u-boats'

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Very interesting and enlightening! Hi Paul, We might want to avoid the temptation to draw conclusions without first having a look "under the surface" ... so to speak. Byron, I agree, the details of each attack are important. The list of hits posted is r...

Re: British submarines' torpedo hits compared to German u-boats'

Thanks for the reply Marcelo. Yes I missed Penelope in my list. She was hit by two torpedoes in 2 attacks - the first hit in the aft engine room, then the second in her boilers abut 15 or so minutes later. There was even the failed attack on Nelson by U56 on Oct 30, 1939 - from a range of only 800m....

British submarines' torpedo hits compared to German u-boats'

Hello all, There is a very noticeable difference between the performance of British submarines vs. major German warships and that of their German counterparts vs. major British targets. Granted there were only four occasions on which the British subs scored against German ships of cruiser size or la...

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the replies and your kind words.

Re: Bismarck Action ships in 1/700

Oh and I almost forgot! Another outlier - no involvement in the chase by was at sea escorting Convoy OG62. Significance? OG62 is mentioned in the movie "Sink The Bismarck" when Capt. Sheppard snaps at Ms. Davis: "What convoy is that?" "OG62 sir" was the reply. OG62, con...

The Wreck of the Bismarck Diorama. Made using an old Aoshima Tirpitz model. I made it using the illustrations in Robert Ballard's book. Because it was waterline, I couldn't properly show the sections of lower hull that might actually be visible on the wreck - so a bot of artistic license I guess. Se...

The u-boats:

1) U-74 (Hobby Boss Type VIIB) which was to attempt to retrieve Bismarck's War Diary, then after the sinking rescued 3 survivors.

2) U-556 (Hobby Boss Type VIIC) which had Force H in its sights, but had no torpedoes left.

Tovey's force - expanded. New additions: 1) HMS Punjabi (Trumpeter Tribal class kit) - I have placed her right ahead of King George V as the two are linked in tragedy. In May 1942, on the way to escort an Arctic convoy in foggy conditions, the two collided with Punjabi being sliced in two by KGV. Sh...
