Re: Battle of the Bulge

Not only Germany but also the whole of Austria and quite likely Denmark as well. In that scenario the Cold War in Europe would be much more in favour of Stalin and his successors - Finland would be communist and Sweden and Norway also sucked into the Soviet ambit. With Soviet forces on the borders o...

Re: Battle of the Bulge

As I understand it Hitler was sufficiently astute in October 1944 to realise that while a substantial counter stroke in the West would have an impact because the Allied Expeditionary Force was at the limit of its supplies, a similar assault in the East would have no impact at all on the Soviet Army ...

Re: Battle of the Bulge

The thing is with flak - a mass stuka attack would aim at knocking out the AA not just with bombs but with the tank busting 3.7 cm guns they carried, Once this is done the ground forces are exposed.

Re: Air war Europe- 1944

In terms of the technical and strategic errors by the Luftwaffe mentioned at the end of the previous post, this is somewhat negative analysis in that identifying the errors is done without any suggestion as to what should have been done instead to try and improve the situation. By that I do not mean...

Re: PBS: Nazi Mega Weapons series.

I have seen some of the programmes in this series, but not the one on Bismarck. At least two of these programmes feature Japanese weapons including Yamato. UK, the Japs were Axis allies of the Nazis but the Japanese were not Nazi themselves like for example Antonescu in Romania. Japan operated total...

1943 German raid on the Isle of Wight

Last year a book was published about an alleged German commando raid in the summer of 1943 launched from Alderney with Ventnor radar station on the Isle of Wight as the target. The purpose of the raid was to seize the cathode ray tubes and other equipment to help the Germans counteract Allied radar....

Yes, it was - sorry it was a typo error on my part.

Re: Ian Ballantyne's views on Bismarcks distruction

Even Titanic with much less subdivision requires about 2,5 h to sink This is particulary interesting. When the Titanics' designer Phillips told Captain Smith around 23.55 on 14 April that the ship was mortally damaged and would founder (15 minutes after iceberg strike) Captain Smith replied by aski...

Re: Ian Ballantyne's views on Bismarcks distruction

even this is from Preston "All the communications, electical power, telemotor leads and boiler uptakes were above the low-armored deck, and enemy gunfire had shredded everything except the main machinery within minutes." Well - how did Mullenheim -Rechberg manage to continue with return f...

Re: Ian Ballantyne's views on Bismarcks distruction

I have avoided commenting on this to see what the general view of members was.

My observation is that if the Bismarck class battleship was so flawed then why did it take so much effort to destroy them?

Re: Regarding Hood at DS : a new article

Buzz is clearly a competent person, able to analyze the engagement in a very good way, taking into account mostly very reliable sources and references ! I agree with you that he is a great "fan" of HMS Hood: some of his statements on her armor and readiness for combat against a modern 35,...

Also they probably would not be much use either as a modern day anti-aircraft gun.

I can't get the link either.

I presume this is the programme about the Dambusters raid that saw the final destruction of Tirpitz, which I have seen several times.

Re: Bismarck Wreck Salvage

Don't forget, the Bismarck was crippled when the British warships arrived, was pretty much a slaughter. The British could have saved many of its crew, I see it as a war crime - a disgrace by the English! Why a disgrace? Bismarck was still fully armed with its 15 inch guns intact. Dorsetshire and Ma...

Re: A desicive battle WW2

There wasn't any specific plan for that, its just how it all panned out. Japanese fighters should have been poisoned over the carriers as a reserve against further attack - but they had all gone after the torpedo bombers and didn't have enough time to climb and meet the dive bombers. The diamond clo...
