Re: Jutland recurrent themes

He had also told the Admiralty beforehand that he would always turn away rather than risk torpedoes/mines.

Re: Read about or do?

Many thanks to both Vic and Bgile. Excellent posts there, that really gave me an insight into life aboard a vessel.

Brilliant :)

Re: Hiroshima and Olimpic

Vic, I asherly agree with you that the bombs were dropped to make a point to Stalin. However, I am not at all convinced that the alternative would have been better for the Japanese people. I don't think an invasion by the Allies was necessary either, a blockade could be very strictly enforced I'm su...

Re: New Poll: critical moment for Germany

Having stated the general principles of winning any battle, are you going to give any details? The paratroops for instance - it seems they know the area better than the troops stationed there, since they are going to destroy pillboxes and disrupt the communications that they know all about, and they...

Re: Marschall instead of Lutjens

What about that.......(that would be really a nightmare for Mr. Churchill).
Not to mention the hundreds, if not thousands, of merchant sailors who would have drowned as a result. Lucky old Churchill I say!!

Re: Russian (Soviet?) war on Georgia

I guess we are going to have to agree to differ about Iraq. My feelings are that, whilst Saddam was a very unpleasant leader towards his own people, he was not an international threat. The attack on Iraq was floated as a part of the war on terror (and who can disagree with waging that war?), but in ...

Re: Russian (Soviet?) war on Georgia

"On what basis would it take the pressure off Al Qaeda? " By taking resources away from the war on terror for one. I would imagine that now Iraq is a base for terrorist groups there is a lot more activity to try and keep track of - that is just a random thought, not based on any other info...

Re: Read about or do?

Well 40 years ago, in my area of England (Derbyshire), the army was viewed by the left wing as a tool of the rich, to be used when required against the working classes. Defending your country is, of course, a totally different kettle of fish, and relegates other thoughts to the rubbish bin. regards ...

Re: Read about or do?

I was far too left wing in my youth to even dream of joining the armed forces, plus I'd probably be seasick. Oh for those simpler days when everything was black and white!!!!!

Re: Russian (Soviet?) war on Georgia

I agree with much of what you first wrote Karl (shock, horror), but not the Al Qaeda bit, which you seem to have taken on board. However I think it goes deeper than that. I was initially in favour of the invasion (that's what it was) or Iraq, for maybe 24 hours, when all the fireworks were going off...

Re: Marschall instead of Lutjens

I've read the twists and turns of this thread with interest, and observed the changes (or evolution?) of people's opinions along the way. A lot has been made of the threat of Glorious' aircraft to the German ships, and the obvious need to attack once they had been spotted. Obviously D'Oyly Hughes wa...

Re: New Poll: critical moment for Germany

Ditto RNfanDan. Vic, I find it hard to understand how someone who posts some really incisive posts re many topics can come up with a scenario for the invasion of Britain that relies on throwing so many 6s. I haven't seen one post that refutes any of lwd's points, only restatements of the same optimi...

Re: Operation Unthinkable

If you read Churchill's history of the second world war it becomes apparent that he was well aware of the threat from the Russians. After Italy he, allegedly, suggested that the war be continued through Austria but this was gainsaid by the Americans and Russians. I have mentioned this previously and...
