Kaiserliche Marine under review in 1911

Sometime during 1911, The SMS Westfalen sails the newest dreadnought members of the 1st Battle Squadron past the fleet flagship SMS Deutschland. On the far left is the Kaiser Wilhelm II’s yacht the SMY Hohenzollern with another small ship. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/06Bdk_5y6vZ37nZw3E7Yp-bNLJ...

Photo: HMS King George V returning from Arctic Convoy Duty

I recently acquired through Ebay a British News Service photograph of the HMS King George V returning from Arctic Convoy Duty. The picture is dated from April 20th, 1942 from the deck of an unknown RN carrier. Arctic Convoy PQ14 had just reached Murmansk on April 18th, 1942. The carrier is question ...

Claus Bergen Prints

I recently came across a book that had several images of Claus Bergen's work from Battle Of Jutland. I have had really no luck in finding any websites except one that sells anything like prints and they want in excess of $300 for just one. All the websites are pretty much either American or British ...

Re: Fort Pickens, Florida, USA (Coastal Defense Fort)

Fort Pickens itself is in different states of disrepair. Bastion D was completely destroyed and other sections were demolished to varying degrees. This actually allows anyone to see the different ways the fort was actually built. Also the QF battery is in better condition then Fort Morgan's which in...

Re: Fort Pickens, Florida, USA (Coastal Defense Fort)

Batteries Cullum, Sevier, Von Swearingen, Payne, & Truman are all batteries located at the mouth of Pensacola Bay. Most of the batteries used 4.7 QF guns to protect the entrance from mine sweepers. None of these guns survive on site. http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg21/lancermc/Fort%20Picken...

Re: Fort Pickens, Florida, USA (Coastal Defense Fort)

Battery 234 was incomplete by the beginning of World War 2. It was used as the sighting & plotting center for the rest of the guns at the Fort until decommissioned. The batteries still active were buried under sand and brush planted to better conceal their locations. This sight includes two unkn...

Re: Fort Pickens, Florida, USA (Coastal Defense Fort)

Battery Worth was home to 4 12inch Mortars. The observation tower of Battery Worth is the highest point for the entire fort. http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg21/lancermc/Fort%20Pickens/DSC_8405_zps54274615.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg21/lancermc/Fort%20Pickens/DSC_8404_zpsdf5232b1.j...

Re: Fort Pickens, Florida, USA (Coastal Defense Fort)

Battery Cooper was 6in QF Disappearing Gun Battery. This is the only battery with a Disappearing gun left. The weapon is not original to the fort, but was donated from the Smithsonian Museum. http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg21/lancermc/Fort%20Pickens/DSC_8359_zps5737e126.jpg http://i244.photobu...

Fort Pickens, Florida, USA (Coastal Defense Fort)

While I may not be active on the forums any more, I still check in on the latest post for anything interesting. Still when I visit a location with naval history, I always like to share my photographs with others. The pictures below come from Fort Pickens, Florida, USA. Fort Pickens was another mason...

Re: Fort Gaines & Fort Morgan (US Coastal Defense Forts)

Honestly I did not have much time to see Fort Gaines since we had to catch the ferry to Fort Morgan. The historic site for Fort Morgan is quite more extensive. It is a true diamond defense fort. You never quite can tell because of its huge size. Fort Morgan is actually made of 4 batteries only the o...

Fort Gaines & Fort Morgan (US Coastal Defense Forts)

After a quick visit to the USS Alabama, my brother and I drove to Dauphin Island, AL to visit Fort Gaines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Gaines_%28Alabama%29 It was the first time I had ever visited a coastal defense fort. Gaines was built before the US Civil War. It and Fort Morgan across the b...

Re: USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park

I know this topic is almost a year old, but I recently visited BB-60 again. Now this time I did not go back aboard the ship. I just took pictures from the outside of the ship including the park and it's other items on display. As with the Alabama herself, much of the other items on display are in ne...

Re: Pre-Dreadnoughts refitted to meet Dreadnought standard

In all my readings of the time period, I am completely unaware of any nation retrofitting a Pre-Dreadnought into one. The reasons for that decision are all clearly described above.
