When I think of BISMARCKs performance it always hits me how good in comparision the DERFFLINGER stood against heavy hits at BoJ compared to BISMARCKS final battle. How many hits did it take to put BISMARCKs MA out of action? How many hits did DERFFLINGER take? I know this is unfair, but anyway. Gene...

The development of fire-control system happened as can be seen here. There is also a note, that the C/38 has the same scheme as C/35 (at the left lower corner)

You're right, the legend says its for the Twins and Hipper-Class. And btw. we all know that BISMARCK got the C/38 System for fire-control. But above the legend it is said that this arrangement does in principal also belong to BISMARCK and later ships. ("Grundsätzlich auch gültig für Kr. Seydlit...

Scheme of BISMARCKs fire-control arrangement

Hi everybody, it has been some time since I posted here. Anyway - I found in an archive this here: http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb295/ingura/Various/SKC-35.jpg and hope this is of interest or can add something to the understanding of BISMARCKs technical layout. Peter (aka ingura - the document...

One thing often forgotten is, that Krupp (who built the guns) did not wait until the Kriegsmarine officially thought of or ordered a gun. The design was independent and Krupp indeed constructed the 38 cm gun in 1934 not exactly knowing if the KM would ever buy this design. Before WW1 he offered desi...

The role of the BISMARCKs and Twins would be a "forward defensive" one, i. e. keeping the north sea free of a presumed French blockade and second prevent french ships to lure in the Baltics (if Poland supports France). The Panzerschiffe would conduct Merchant warfare against france and the...

@ Tiornu

I know it is not BISMARCK, but I do have in my files the general wartime instruction for scuttling SMS HINDENBURG. I think the procedures are almost the same. If requested I would try my hand on a translation...

Although the Twins and BISMARCK were both having 3 shafts and 2 parallel rudders, the effect was very different. The Twins did have problems with this arrangement - very slow reactions BISMARCK and TIRPITZ were very reactive even at 5° rudder-angle - which causes problems too (if the rudder is block...

Hi there, I would like to add something here. From what I read the Frahm'sche Schlingertanks were not exactly a success. Expert might have noticed that DERFFLINGER was sporting them and did not have bilgekeels. The two sisterships LÜTZOW and HINDENBURG did have bilgekeels and not anti-rolling-device...
