Re: If Bismarck could have launched final plane...

It's interesting to speculate about this. We would, of course, probably not have much additional on the sinking itself, but would probably have recovered a fair number of track charts, photographs, and film from the Denmark Strait action, and other subsequent events, e.g. more details revolving arou...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

My personal thanks for those who have expressed support for my efforts during the past couple of posts. Although the previous two posts were technically submitted past the official cutoff time, insofar as the closure was explicitly expressed as being voluntary in nature, because the posts were from ...

Re: PoW shell splash

The observation that "...The camera appears to have fairly high magnification and a narrow field of view" is probably correct. Normally negatives are (or perhaps more correctly, were) 'cropped' in printing, enlarging only a portion -- usually the most interesting portion -- of the actual image seen ...

Re: PoW shell splash

So far as the height of shell splashes is concerned, having observed a few, I think it would be fair to say that they tend to be reasonably constant from shell to shell, but that the general average height seems to vary a bit depending upon conditions. So 'high' splashes might be common one day, wit...

Re: PoW shell splash

The photograph is very poor from a photogrammetric standpoint, but assuming reasonable values for the heights of Bismarck and the shell splash, it would appear that the splash is about 1/3 of the way to Bismarck. Plus or minus quite a bit.

Re: PoW shell splash

The abbreviation "A&A", need not in any way be considered offensive; it's just an acronym. In order to save time, have used terms like "the B/V hypothesis" (where "B/V" = "Bonomi/Virtuani" ) myself, and can assure you no offense was intended. I honestly did not know what "D&S" referred to, which is ...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

I would concur with immediately previous posts and suggest that, insofar we have now reached the stage where we simply seem to be arguing about what we are arguing about, this particular thread be closed. I would therefore propose a voluntary closure to take effect 24 hours from now, i.e. at 12 noon...

Re: Hit on Bismarck's turret

I am not certain why these splinters -- if they existed at all -- might be of any particular significance, i.e. I don't think I quite understand the question. Might you elaborate or rephrase, please?

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

So far as effectiveness is concerned, I would again suggest the old 'Shots Per Gun Per Minute' (SPGPM) and 'Hits Per Gun Per Minute' (HPGPM) as something worth considering. Although at this stage what information of historical value might be extracted from these numbers remains problematical. Just n...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

I have had to again make rather extensive deletions and editorial changes to various comments. I would ask participants to refrain from using emojis, bolding, all-caps or underlining in postings, as in most cases these add little or nothing to the discussion and only serve to inflame other participa...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Without seeing the original negatives, etc., it's difficult to tell. Technically, we don't even know if the filming was done in 16mm or 35mm format, although these were (usually) about the same aspect ratio. (As I recall, one was about 1.34:1 while the other was about 1.37:1, but that's just recolle...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Northcape has suggested this thread be closed as futile. Because the discussion still seems fairly lively and has remained at least tolerably civil, I will allow it to remain open for now.

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

With respect to some of my previous analysis Mr. Virtuani wrote: Where is this value coming from, please ? AFAIK, the German 15" gun had a shell angle of fall of 10°-11°at 15000 meters. This would match very well with the PoW damage report, that estimated 9°. My statement was "Depending upon quibble...
