Re: Portholes bow and stern

guys, I'd just like to point out my very first post: Bismarck had a few portholes each side at the bow and stern, outwith the armour belt. I was never suggesting Bismarck had portholes along the citadel section. No probs though. EDIT: sorry, wrong end of the stick this post. Feel free to continue.

Re: Portholes bow and stern

Incidentally, that photo earlier of the stern portholes also quite neatly shows the 'propeller guards', as kindly pointed out to me by Terje Langoy in the post titled 'Bismarck turret installation photos'

Re: Portholes bow and stern

Yes, you can find a fairly complete layout in G&D
I'm not familiar with this. Grateful if you could expand on what is G&D

Thanks

Portholes bow and stern

Bismarck had a few portholes each side at the bow and stern, outwith the armour belt. What was behind these ? Was it crew cabins ? For who ? Map rooms ? I'm just trying to think who, what or which functions would benefit from natural light.

Thanks for any replies

Re: Fuel oil on board Bismarck 27 May 1941

IFAIK, 40% of the hull plating on port and starboard sides of the wreck is reported missing, behind which i think were fuel oil tanks. This was probably caused by the impact with the seabed, the sections already being weakened by torpedo holes each end of them. The wreck is not near land or any cons...

Re: Bismarck Turret Installation Photos

Terje, i like the style of your posts. Thanks.

I think you've got it. I always wondered what those 'poles' were.

Re: Bismarck Turret Installation Photos

I'm probably missing something here, but i can't see how a 'pole', swung out from the hull and suspended by wires, can 'guard the propellers'

Re: Bismarck off Norwegian coast 21 May 1941

But where on earth have they hidden the Kriegsmarine ensignia? It is not to be seen in her main mast, and shouldn't be there either since she's not in battle right now
correct, AFAIK

It's stated in the caption for the photo linked below "Photographed from astern, 1940-41, showing stern anchor in its recessed well, folding propeller guards , armor belt and other details of hull and superstructure." http://tinyurl.com/3fo8n7 folding propeller guards ?
