Hi All, I'm finding this quite interesting. Could you not launch from the catapult either port or starboard ? Surely both sides were not out of action as a result of the one shell hit ? Noted Tommy303's post about compressed air line being hit. Did this line serve both port and starboard ? IMHO this...

Many Thanks to all I'm of the opinion now that these domed covers were almost certainly to do with the cranes, even considering the H-class plans that hellomartin highlighted. Can we say "the purpose of the domed covers was to protect the searchlights within from the potential damage from multiple a...

Open Bridge

Hello everyone,

Would Lutjens and Lindemann really have been standing in this position during the final battle, knowing the ships limitations in its damaged condition, or would they really have been inside the well armoured 'conning tower' (fwd fire control) ?

Thanks for any replies

Sorry to go slightly o/t but,

One of the reported 'last salvos' from HOOD, was when the bow was reported upright and sinking fast, this surely can't have been from the actions of the crew in the turret, as they would presumably be 90 degrees to their surroundings ?

As per usual top notch reply from tommy303

So total 106 x 4 (guns) left (approx) = 424 rounds

Assuming 1 salvo is A+B or C+D = 4 per salvo

106 salvos can be fired

1 salvo every 30 secs and its gone inside one hour

Bismarck as far as i know had approx. capacity of 1000 shells of various types.

40 or thereabouts were expended in the Denmark Strait.

Up High Gun Directors

Is it extremely 'lucky' to hit one of these ?

Or can 'good, rapid' fire actually be directed specifically to that area ?

Thanks for any replies

Hi All, I found a post on another site dated 10-07-2004. It's relating to the Tirpitz boats though, but i thought it worthy of this thread: Your statement "except for some guns and machinery it is all minor parts" is not correct. I own one of the 27 feet boats that was onboard Tirpitz when it sunk. ...
