I think tommy303 could well be right about it having to do with the cranes, having outlined several reasons in previous posts. My latest offering is that many lifts may have been carried out using a 4 point sling arrangement, similar to this: http://tinyurl.com/25zxnb The domed covers could therefor...

Looking at this photo again, would the crane not be swung anticlockwise from outboard when recovering a seaplane, towards aft and inboard, away from the funnel ? Also, judging by the length of the boom, even at maximum 'boom up' angle and with the hook fully retracted, anything attached to the hook ...

tommy303, Your replies are top notch. Thanks again. I like the theory of the cover being there to protect the light from damage from the crane boom in rolling seas. From my experience there is always a certain amount of 'play' in a crane slewing bearing (the main one which it revolves on), allowing ...

Without watching it again, i seem to remember in the Cameron video, one of the subs travels past what they describe as a searchlight on the way to the wreck. Pretty certain it had the louvres. Was this a signal light and not a searchlight ?

Thanks for any replies.

Thanks tommy303, That is a very good reply. I don't doubt your knowledge (far more than mine), but one or two questions: Wouldn't the 'louvres' on the front of the searchlights (in a closed position) not prevent reflections anyway when trained outboard ? The domed searchlights seem to be in as big a...

Strangely enough, i'm sure i've seen that 'ribbed' effect before on items made from plastic . I'm thinking of those wheelbarrows with spheres at the front instead of a conventional wheel, and i'm sure i've seen it somewhere else too. In fact, would it not be pretty difficult to make that hemi-sphere...

All the main searchlights seem to have these louvres on the front of the lenses. If not used for signalling, i guess they just protected the lenses when closed and the searchlight was not in use. If signal lights are much smaller, that blows my 'clean signal light immediately available' theory away ...

mmmm.... Interesting point Martin. Signal lights as opposed to seachlights. Might be onto something here. Although, the actual 'lantern' parts do seem to all look the same. Could a seachlight and a signal light be one and the same thing, simply with the addition of some mechanical 'slatters' to the ...

The more i think about this the stranger it gets.

Looking at archive photos the domed cover even has a 'ribbed' effect. Why is this? Is it just strengthening?

Why bother to protect a searchlight in the first place ?

Hi Martin, I'm also pleased for you on your finding of a chunk of funnel. Update on photo #9, its almost certainly the lower platform on the aft mast, you can see it in this photo, top left: http://tinyurl.com/2wb5qv Also, i think #5, #7, #11, #12, #13, and #16 are of the Admirals bridge. You can se...

Thanks Bgile

Protecting a seachlight seems a bit strange. (fully enclosing - you can't use it)

This is excellent. If i may thank Martin and Jose and all others. On very quick look (all this could well be baloney): #1 pass for now #2 pass for now #3 not a shell case expert #4 looks familiar, part of mainmast or aft mast ? #5 are we looking forward from aft at the port side admirals bridge ? #6...
