Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

It just appeared illogical for Holland to ask PoW to search directly aft and astern with the rdf equipment that was mounted furthest forward and for which task it was impossible for it to have done. It seemed to be doing Holland a disservice as he was a very experienced officer and if we can spot t...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Thanks Paul but that just confuses things more as Leach claims that PoW 284 could not bear beyond 070°. The 284 was mounted on the fore director which would mean that the director could train to a compass bearing of 020° ie directly aft as the ship was sailing to 070° or off her port quarter but no...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

This then meant I couldn't understand the rdf order as if PoW was alongside Hood on her port side Hood herself would have masked PoW rdf from 020°-140°. That's why I wondered if PoW was on Hoods port quarter meaning the 090° was a compass bearing? ( oh dear my brain hurts) Hi Cag, Once the turn to ...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi Alberto thanks if PoW was stationed on the compass bearing 090° on a course of 285° the bearing 090° from Hoods point of view would be off Hoods starboard quarter would it not? On Rowell's map he states Hood was stationed on a bearing of 260° throughout the action ie Hood was on a compass bearin...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi Alberto, I see what you're saying, and you may be right. Here's an interesting entry from PoW's log: 0353: 28 knots 0450: Took over guide. 0505: "Hood" resumed guide. Full speed. (my bold) This may be where Hood pushed to 29 knots and PoW had to pull out all the stops to keep up with her! Paul

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi all, @Alberto: The reason I suggested Hood would have to cross astern of PoW was that crossing ahead with such a short distance between the two could be risky, especially at 28 knots. The separation of the two ships would decrease as Hood moved across, risking collision... which Hood already had ...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Is anybody able to explain what should have been the maneuver in this timeframe ? Hi Alberto, I think I figured that out when we were discussing Antonio's track chart for the 160 degree turn to the south west at 0203. It was by Blue Pendant with PoW initially bearing 90 deg from Hood - i.e. on her ...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi Antonio, First up, I know, very happily, that you and Alberto are both in northern Italy and so are personally unaffected by the terrible earthquakes that have rocked Italy, but still, just a word of sympathy for the loss off life and property. Wishing Italy all the best for the recovery effort. ...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi Antonio, I see your latest track chart, but there is a "complication" you haven't taken into account - the spread of the destroyer screen ahead of the battlecruisers. How far ahead were they? How far apart were they spread? If visibility issues made PoW unable to determine if they all received th...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Because if an order like this was repeated after the turn of the battlecruisers as it seems clear to me based on Ltnt Cdr T.J. Cain account, ... it can only mean that somebody was still following the main warships after the turn SW on 200° course and there was the need to tell him to " stay behind ...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi Antonio, That second diagram would not, to me, represent a Blue Pendant turn, since the ships would make the same turn simultaneously. Therefore, PoW would end up on Hood's port side, slightly aft of her beam after a 160 degree turn to port. It seems that they stayed that way until 0450 when PoW ...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Course was altered by blue pendant to 200 degrees at 0203, B.C.1 then ordered "Prince of Wales" to search with type 284 ... What type of turn is the one with " Blue Pendant " from 360° to 200°, ... so 160° to port ? "Blue Pendant" means "alter course together" i.e. the ships were turned simultaneou...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi Antonio, In the other hand Norfolk did nothing of that level and the radar difference cannot be used as a justification for such a poor overall performance for the Squadron leading cruiser. Wake-Walker duty was to stay closer and monitor Suffolk work while controlling the overall shadowing effort...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Hi all, Wow...I see we've found more fodder for the Wake-Walker prosecution! That could very well be... But looking at it, WW did report his sighting of the unknown vessel as he should have, and gave the relevant information of his plot position. We can assume he had a basic idea of the beari...

Re: May 23/24 night shadowing and interception approach CS1/BC1

Do you realize what this means ? Please explain it to me ... and confirm me that you really want to state this from your side ... Well Antonio, as far as I can figure - as as been discussed at length, the positions given by Suffolk and Norfolk for themselves - DR positions - were both incorrect - i...
