Re: why couldnt she steer

From Garzke´s:

Page 237: "...acording to Mullenheim..orders from the brdige came in rapid succession: ´Port and CENTER engines half ahead...´"

It seems that the center shaft was OK.

Re: why couldnt she steer

Answering your second question, the most remarkably fact of her story was her mission, breaking into the Atlantic, along with a cruiser, a sea dominated by the British, who had what, 15(?) battleships, carriers, cruisers, long range air patrols. That was bold and brave, a mission against many odds. ...

Re: why couldnt she steer

Well, my friend, I really don´t want to spoil this thread with that discussion, it has been treated elsewhere. But think it: -how many warships have two internet forums named after her -how many warships have a movie with her story (well, now you have Yamato) -which one has the greatest number of bo...

Re: why couldnt she steer

Hi guys:

i am astonished by the fact that the mortal wound to the most famous battleship ever is not properly documented. Is this because everyone involved perished in the final battle?

Re: why couldnt she steer

I think that some info is lacking here. From AOTS´Bismarck, I see that there are 6 compartments involved, from stern to bow: Rudder gear room 2 - Rudder gear room 1 Rudder machine room 2 - Rudder machine room 1 Manual steering room 2 - Manual steering room 1 From Garzke´s: Page 235: "The torped...

Re: why couldnt she steer

Hi VeenenbergR:

Why is it, then, that every trial made to steer the ship mentions the propellers and never the starboard rudder?

Re: why couldnt she steer

Vic, I re-read the BS story from Garzke, I will reproduce some parts and make a some questions: Page 235: "...eventually the starboard rudder was uncoupled from the steering gear, and the hand rudder was engaged to the rudder yoke, but the port coupling was so badly jammed that it could not be ...

Re: why couldnt she steer

Hi Vic: I only quoted Mr. Garzke, who being a renown naval arquitect would have his reasons for writing it. According to him the starboard rudder was disengaged from the machinery and could be used "manually", i presume he means some kind of tackle. If the damaged rudder could have been dr...

Re: why couldnt she steer

Garzke in Battleships, Axis and neutrals says that had the rudder been separated she could have steered fine. Moreover, a study is mentioned of a method to severe a rudder shaft with explosives, without damage to the hull, for future cases. The study was suspended after a while.

Naval firepower by Friedman

Hi all: I have just finished reading it. I swear it is the last book I buy of the author. I don´t deny that it has some good content, but the author´s writing is very poor. He goes back and fore in his ideas and concepts, sometimes becoming confusing to the reader. The book is more historical than t...

Re: Brazil buys 50 helicopters, 5 submarines from France

Hi Robert: Bolivia still claims her former land. I don´t know legally and diplomatically what is the state of the claim, but they feel they had been robbed. Bear in mind that the loss of those lands made Bolivia an inner country. Aside this, the Bolivian military has no capabilities at all to fight ...

Re: Brazil buys 50 helicopters, 5 submarines from France

Hi guys: Currently there are very few conflic posiblities in the Southern Cone: -Chile has a long standing dispute on its northern border with Peru and Bolivia. That´s why they acquired F-16 and Leopard II recently -There is a feeling that the Evo Morales government in Bolivia can lead to internal u...

Re: M-1 Garand vs. Mauser K98

I am sorry but the KE deposit IS wrong. The prove is that to this theory, back in the 80s, many police agencies in the US (even the FBI) adopted high speed, light weight, hollow-point bullets, in the believe that the high KE of this bullets, caused mostly by the high-speed, would be fully transferre...

Re: M-1 Garand vs. Mauser K98

The pistol is more a social symbol in the army than a practical weapon. In fact some armies used pistols that were close to useless: the Japanese with their Nambus for example. I think that an army can do without them.
