Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

The reason is not entirely obvious to me. I have read the Santarini quote very carefully, and must admit that I find it very difficult to understand – too many double negatives, etc. In any case it appears to deal not with gunnery issue per se, but with how the British might have afterwards might ha...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Mr. Robertson wrote: "It makes up to some extent for the non-publication of the book about Bismarck by Garcke, Dulin and Jurens. Presumably they chose an inept publisher!" It's "Garzke", not "Garcke". (That being said, Bill G. -- in correspondence I am typically address...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

At least in the USN, the most valid comparison of rate of fire was usually taken to be Shots Per Gun Per Minute (SPGPM). Usually, in target practices, no discrimination was made regarding the reasons behind missed shots although in unusual situations some discrimination might be made between shots m...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

I am glad to see that a more conciliatory tone seems to be falling over us lately. Let us hope that it -- accompanied of course by reasonable debate as required -- continues. So far as revisiting previous 'provocations', perhaps improperly handled, my feeling is that rather than re-open old wounds, ...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

All though there have been some rather militant postings early in the week, insofar as things seem to have calmed down quite a bit lately, and insofar as Wadinga has suggested that he has some new material to post, I will defer to his request and keep this thread open, i.e. unlocked, until and unles...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

It would appear that at this stage, correspondents have in fact more-or-less 'talked themselves out' regarding issues surrounding the Denmark Strait action and issues surrounding ammunition-handling on the KGV class battleships. Discussions of the actual issues at hand have been largely replaced by ...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Just to correct Northcape's posting, technically Alberto HAS been banned from posting, but only for another five or six days. This was done not to restrict the presentation of arguments pe-se, but in an attempt to control what I perceived to be an inappropriately aggressive tone in the way those arg...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Mr. Virtuani: I have read Northcape's post again quite carefully and cannot personally see anything provocative in it at all. It does not take sides, merely characterizing the debate itself as 'childish' and 'rediculous'. No participant is mentioned by name, and in fact -- as mentioned earlier -- No...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

I often -- perhaps usually -- see the discussion as representing an exercise in historical technique, i.e. as revolving not so much around what the facts are, or might have been, but in the methodology surrounding the interpretation of historical documentation in general. The methodology learned -- ...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Alecsandros wrote: "a better option would have been steadying at 20km from the enemy and pounding away with his 5 working heavy guns" This may be true provided it was tactically achievable, i.e. assuming Bismarck was willing to accept this situation, i.e. fighting at a constant range of 20...

Re: Old men's memories

I was witness to a shot-gun style murder many years ago, and attempted to assist the victim. Many memories. Many police photographs. Years later, met a woman who's brother was one of the police officers involved, and who -- probably somewhat unethically -- arranged to show me some of the photos of t...

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

My perception has been that Mr. Virtuani's commentary, after a warnings have been sent, remain unacceptably aggressive, argumentative, and provocative in tone. Rather than lock the thread, which cuts off All input to the topic at hand, I have, with some regret, decided to ban Mr. Virtuani from the f...

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

I would suspect that those working in the repair facilities, etc. hadn't seen any action reports at all, as such was not required for them to do their duties. As there was no particular advantage in leaning towards any pre-supposed hypothesis -- assuming that even one had been created at the time th...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Mr. Viruani wrote: "I don't think I have seen here in the forum many pages, info or disclosures from the next book Mr.Jurens was due to publish about Bismarck... not even a battlemap... Same reason." On this side, there actually IS no reason. There is, at this stage, I don't feel there is ...

Re: Message Traffic heard by RODNEY 24 May 1941

My own view would be to suggest that the evidence regarding a 15" vs an 8" hit is incomplete and at least in part contradictory, leaving the actual situation somewhat indeterminate. My observations have been that the determination of the angle of fall of a given projectile is often impossi...
