Re: What were cannon laws like in the Age of Sail?
I've never mined the subject deeply, but there are some examples which come to mind - > The ships of the great Portguese and Dutch trading expeditions that rounded the Cape of Good Hope and ventured up to East Africa, India and Asia were heavily armed. My suspicion is that any such expedition which ...

Re: British and French naval fleet numbers in the 19th century
Hi PetterJhon, Short answer is pretty much - no. in the nineteenth century, Great Britain was VERY serious about maintaining a naval "two power standard", i.e., that the size of the RN should be no less than the sum of the next two largest foreign fleets. A decent starting point for invest...

"Nur die dümmsten Kälber wählen sich ihren Schlächter selber" (Only the dumbest cows of the flock are happy to elect their butcher). The final stage of destruction of the US society, started by unregulated capitalism with Reagan, can now be observed in real-time. On average, the US citize...

Re: If Bismarck had made it to France
[ 1 ] Bismarck goes right into dry-dock for repairs - she is the most important German warship in port. [ 2 ] British Bomber Command spends a year trying to destroy her through repeated air raids. The open question is whether the RN seeks to blockade these four German ships in Brest harbor - mines, ...

"From the height of the crow nest (or the radar platform), White could theoretically see the tops of the German ships before they were at 30 sm. He did not, therefore visibility was not "gin-clear" as speculated, but "limited" to 18-19 sm." Following data taken or other...

Re: Bismarck at DS after the second turn
Mathematically speaking, it would certainly be possible for Bismarck to have first become visible, despite her trailing Prinz Eugen in formation. It all depends upon how much higher above the waterline was Bismarck's main director as compared to that of Prinz Eugen.

Re: Bismarck at DS after the second turn
Concur with Mr Jurens here. The exact nature of the times denoted on the signal transmissions are unspecified. Are they the actual times that the sightings and bearings were taken? Ore are they the times at which the signals were transmitted? Can anyone advise on standard RN signal practice contempo...

Re: Bismarck at DS after the second turn
Byron, I don’t think so. In his war diary Brinkmann says that the speed calibration of both ships was not equal. Prinz Eugen had to made revolutions for one knot less than Bismarck to sail at the same speed. That means that while on Bismarck 28 knots were ordered, Brinkmann had to order just 27 kno...

Re: Bismarck at DS after the second turn
Hello Antonio, I have some difficulties with that simple explanation. I think we agree that 27 knots in 23 minutes are 10.35 sm, while 28 knots are 10,73 sm in the same time. I took the liberty to adjust the bearings and Prinz Eugen's track. Then I've shifted the track parallel to your original tra...
