Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy

Most of the guns installed had maximum ballistic ranges of below 30km, and effective ranges below 27km due to elevation limitations While this is true for those having 15 degree max elevation, the ship with limited to 15 degrees where outnumbered by those with a 30 degree or better elevation, at le...

Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy

USS Heerman used the rain squall for several succesful surprise attacks this seems to be impossible if the Japanese used radar for tactical purposes. As Dave said above, even those with blindfire capable radar preferred to corroborate with optics as well. I must say though, the general hypothesis o...

Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy

... Yamato was comissioned in 1942, and in the 1939 RN and USN battlelines there wasn't any rangefinder remotely similar in performance to the mammoth 15meters baselength installed on the Japanese battleship. Longer range finders seems more of an axis thing then i guess. V Veneto class had a 12.5 m...

Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy

Thus the rangefinding would be almost entirely by visual rangefinding, which gave it's best results (for the 1915-1927 ships involved) below 20.000yards. Yamato, working on visual, was able to obtain a hit on White Plains at 30k + Yards, and hit a destroyer at about 30k yards. I know Japanese optic...

Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy

... A 1939 battleship encounter would be fought at 15-17km range, owing to limitations in rangefinding and ballistic accuracy. This was the range-band at which both RN and USN performed vast majority of gunnery training (up to 19000y) If Steve Lorenz has his ballistics right, which I'm pretty sure ...

Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy

And the Germans found that most multiple plates systems can be estimated for effective thickness by using this formula: Square root (p1^ +p2^ +p3^...). In the West Virginia case: sq root ((.5 x 1.5)^ + 1.5^ + splinter deck^) This is a very important issue IMO. This was my biggest point when in mode...

Re: 1939 Battleship Forces: US Navy vs Royal Navy

From what I have read, British armor was about 15-20% more effective than US armor - which would mean there would be an advantage for the Brits. Also, IIRC when the US battleships were modernized they did not replace their existing armor, they added to it. So we would have better quality armor layer...

Re: CO2 influence on climate explained

Did you watch Salby's presentation? If so, you should know what complete nonsense your assumptions are here in that light. OK, I get it. You find 1, perhaps 2 scientists who have a different theory than other scientists, and thereby cancel out all other scientific work as complete nonsense. This by...

Re: CO2 influence on climate explained

That is incorrect data. The observatory in Hawaii still has it as less than 400ppm this year. It's been over 400 since February. The last annual data is 398.55 for 2014. As 3 out of 4 months for this year have been over 400, I think it would be safe to assume the annual data for 2015 when compiled ...

Re: CO2 influence on climate explained

What is needed to demonstrate ''global warming'' - whether natural or man made - is a clear plain English explanation of the process, which can then be subject to scientific testing. Here's a pretty simple test you can do yourself if you want - shows how C02 works to increase temperature. http://ww...

Re: Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck

I'd agree with most of what has been written, the 20mm is not of much use for supporting fire, the 37mm at semi auto both has range issues and ROF issues, the 105mm's were good weapons with range. I think though that the Prinz Eugen may have drawn off attackers, even if it was recognized as not bein...

Re: CO2 influence on climate explained

I would really have to spend a lot of time looking at both sides explanations to come to any conclusion I'm comfortable with. I do say it's a heck of a lot better presented than Inhofe and his snowball :D With his snowball, and saying in essence that global warming is a farce because there is snow o...

Re: CO2 influence on climate explained

Interesting. I'll say it makes me look at whether the cause is man made or not in more depth. I also found a retort for Salby's position here: http://www.skepticalscience.com/Murry-Salby-Confused-About-The-Carbon-Cycle.html It's a least worth a read if you are going to keep an open mind. I think it ...

Yes you are putting words in my mouth. No you are not remotely representing what I said. What I said was: You (and others) have taken this proposed small tax increase and have assumed that it is the Cloward-Piven strategy in action :shock This was in direct response to you saying this: Wackos? LOL....

Re: Japanese 5"/50 vs 3.9"/65

[1] Service experience with the 5in/L51 had led to opinion within the IJN that the mount had been too lightly built. [2] The 3.9in/L65 mount incorporated complex all-elevation power-ramming and auto fuze-setting features which the 5in/L51 lacked. [3] The 3.9in/L56 mount possessed much higher traini...
