Re: Aircraft Carrier Elevators

Don't know if this has come up before. Nice pun! Seriously though, the elevator platforms were typically hoisted from the sides, at least in RN vessels of inter-war and WW2 era. Steel channels/columns on port and starboard elevator sides contained the load-bearing parts; in those I am famili...

Re: Hit on POW compass platform

... and IF a 15" or a 8" exploded just outside the compass platform, it would not have left just a circular hole on the Splinter Shield of the Upper Bridge Searchlight Sights position..... Bye, Alberto This is incorrect. There are a number of examples of AP shells piercing thin structures...

Re: Hit on POW compass platform

If it WAS an 8-inch shell, then there will be some further work needed on the chart. The difference in angle of incoming fire between Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, would mean that PoW's aspect toward the striking shell has to be shifted.

NOW what happens to the split-second calculus?

Re: Hood's sinking: the timing of that fatal hit

Interesting is Kennedy's timeline: "At 5.55 a.m. the Vice-Admiral made the signal for a Blue Pendant turn of 20 degrees to port..." And, more surprisingly..."By now, the Bismarck had obtained several straddles on the Hood ..." "Several straddles" would imply that, of th...

Re: Hit on POW compass platform

Which of the two survivors, other than Leach, was the Chief Yeoman of Signals;.i.e., Rowell or Gilbert? I note Ludovic Kennedy's account mentions only Leach and the Yeoman of Signals were left alive, but he fails to mention a name for the Yeoman-- was he mistaken? Was the third survivor actually the...

Re: Bismarck and the whistle blower.

That was quite an accomplishment, since Bismarck was not capable of 32 kts. In a good tailwind, and with the faster Prinz Eugen providing a towing assist to Bismarck with a specially-constructed and reinforced fuel hose (so they could share oil losses evenly), the pair could just make 32 knots. Aft...

Re: Hit on POW compass platform

I don't mean to diminish matters in any way...but why would there be a column for a casualty's gender , aboard a battleship? Was the form shown above, a document used throughout the RN, including shore facilities and hospital ships, or places where females would have served alongside males (such as ...

Re: Hood's sinking: the timing of that fatal hit

The possibility of HMS Hood having executed a second 20°turn to port before her destruction, particularly without (apparently) waiting for Prince of Wales to hoist-and-dip bunting in acknowledgment, would only have served to put her further to PORT of Leach's ship. My point? The further to port Hood...

Re: Hood's sinking: the timing of that fatal hit

I had 2 possibilities : 1) Remain silent and vague and allow what was incorrectly done to still be considered a valid option. 2) Proceed with the researches and enable people to see the events under the more correct light given the still available evidences. Antonio; That is a key flaw of "his...

Re: Hood's sinking: the timing of that fatal hit

I may be unwelcome in posting my opinion here at this time, but I am a bit alarmed by what I see has taken place, just since my last "attentive" visit to this site. For the record, I support Paul Cadogan's recent efforts to bring some sensibility to what I feel is a --shall I say, "vi...

If I'm right the twin performed always very well when in action. Bye, Alberto I believe it very likely at least some of this may be attributed, not ...

The problem with the interlocks has been overstated.

The problems had NOTHING to do with whether there were two, three or four guns per turret.
