Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Hi LWD! My impression of the Japanese is they would have jumped at the chance to engage an opposing battleship. I agree that is what they would want to do. But what they can do in light of their overall in transit mission and the small speed advantage that might allow the British to dictate whether ...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Hi LWD! Good stuff. Do you have a number for the arc of fire for Yamato's main guns? If the two British ships are off her stern quarters that puts them at roughly 45 degrees off each stern. You are right, 45 degrees is exactly what i have in mind! I'll have to do some research to find out about the ...

Re: Expedient Big Five Upgrade - December 1940

Hi RF! What you say is correct, but I think it was only one half or part of the US thinking in December 1940 when the proposed decision would be made. I chose the following from your Post to frame my response. . . . . if the US strategy is to engage on a battleship war. . . . . . . . Where the analy...

Re: Expedient Big Five Upgrade - December 1940

Hi RF! Why are we considering an ''expedient upgrade to the big five'' when a better solution is an expansion long term to the carrier forces instead? Five reasons. First, the new carrier and fast BB construction will not be available in significant quantities until 1943 so there is still a pressing...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Hi Tommy and Bgile! First thanks for the explanation of salvo chasing. Maybe the British could counter the tactic with two ships shooting instead of one with each firing independently instead of following the flag's lead. Different salvo timing and patterns fired from two widely different angles wou...

Re: Expedient Big Five Upgrade - December 1940

Hi ALec! But I think the Japanese fire control system in Nagato and Yamato was better than the one present in the 1930's in the old American battleline IIRC you are right, because the Japanese optics and their arrangement in the rangefinders were better. Whether the US specifically knew that at the ...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Hi LWD and all! Thanks LWD for the response to my post, which raises good points. As to the other intervening posts about the armor and construction, I just assume that regardless of the technical details, Yamato has a significant protection advantage. "The problem with this is that Yamato can ...

Re: Expedient Big Five Upgrade - December 1940

Hi All! I found some additional information by doing a search for "standard class Battleship rebuild" on Google Books, which turned up some pertinent parts of Friedman's US Battleships which are very informative. I think that's a pretty good secondary source. Unfortunately it restricted vi...

Re: Expedient Big Five Upgrade - December 1940

Good point. That would be a big loss from the historical reconstruction. IIRC from other Threads, there's substantial opinion that the 40mm Bofors proved even more effective than the 5/38 DP as AAA. Also IIRC, there were some threads about some 1 inch AAA gun that would be available in 12/40 but did...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

As I posted earlier, use the two knot KGV speed advantage to stay out of range until you can maneuver one ship on each of Yamato's hindquarters and then start shooting. Only the three stern guns can bear on you freely while the six up front either can't or are severely impaired. If Yamato turns, run...

Expedient Big Five Upgrade - December 1940

Hi All! Although this topic has elements of a hypothetical scenario, I decided to put it here because it seems that most of the issues involve either technology, mechanics or construction logistics.. A. It's December 1940 and it is clear to the US that the s h i t is going to hit the fan in about a ...

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

Hi RF and everyone else! These threads to tend to meander a bit off topic. Sometimes the expansions are within the fair scope of the original and sometimes not. The original topic was substitute New Orleans or Zara Class for Sydney; I think it's reasonable to expand that to other classes of heavy an...

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

Hi All! I just watched an Australian account about the search for and finding of the Sydney on YouTube. This is a serious matter for those who lost family and for that nation and n not an appropriate place for shoddy scholarship, including my own. I just re-read the 2009 Inquiry report and Kormoran,...

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

Hi RF and All! Sydney is a fascinating although tragic subject because the lack of survivors from her gives rise to a probably insoluble mystery. I'm replying to two of RF's able and knowledgeable points. 1. "What you have to look at are the effects not just of a first salvo, but the effect of ...

Re: Swap Sydney with Zara or New Orleans

Hi RF and All! An 8 inch gun cruiser - Detmers loses? Well if it was HMS Australia with Burnett in command, identical scenario, what do you think? Bigger target = better chance of both of Kormoran's torpedoes hitting...... I admit that my statement about if you change anything (such as heavy cruiser...
