Re: Bismarck - 24 Hours to Doom

I haven't seen this documentary but your comments about it don't surprise me at all. If you want to see a decent one, check "Sink the Bismarck" from 1996, 100 minutes duration. GREYSTONE COMMUNICATIONS INC. PRODUCTION FOR A&E. Not perfect, but probably the best Bismarck documentary in ...

Re: British 4.5"/45 (11.4 cm) vs American 5"/38 (12.7 cm) Mark 12

It seems to me very difficult to justify HACS is equal or superior to Mk37/Mk1. You may argue that HACS Mk IV with Type 285 is better than Mk37 with optical RF. But that's just illustrates how revolutionary radar was. The following is from ADM 220/221: "The Type 285 set has had to fight exclus...

Re: Range of Bismarck's guns

To be more precise, at 30º maximum elevation the range of the 38cm guns was 35,550 meters = 19.19 nautical miles.

Today is the 450th anniversary of the battle of Lepanto. Arguably the greatest naval battle of all time.

Re: The so-called "GKdos100"

The following article by B. Hoyer is a very good complement to the GKdos100.

Re: The so-called "GKdos100"

OK, since nobody has commented much on the GKdos100, I will go first. In the document, there is a comparison example between the battleships “Warspite” and “Bayern” both having 15 inch guns. It is interesting to note that according to the calculations within, the British gun can penetrate Bayern's b...

Since we don't want to leave anyone out, let's also add the weather observation ship, Sachsenwald, the Spanish heavy cruiser Canarias, and even the Spichern, from which the Prinz Eugen refuelled from . :D

Edit: and a Sunderland flying boat over the Denmark Strait battlefield as the Hood blew up.

Paul, that is an amazing collection.
Thanks for sharing with us! :ok:
I think the U556 would be a nice addition. Spotted Renown and Ark Royal in the evening of the 26th and was within torpedo range, but had no "fishes" left.

The so-called "GKdos100"

Greetings to all after a few weeks absent, I have started to upload to the website the English translation of the " Unterlagen und Richtlinien zur Bestimmung der Hauptkampfentfernung und der Geschosswahl ", commonly known as the "GKdos100". This document was translated from the G...

Re: Paintwork Query

My question is that I can’t place the lower, brighter white rhomboid stepped below the boot line? I know there was a step around the false bow waves, but this seems to be by a ‘Baltic Stripe’. I realise these were painted over but this still seems very noticeable though. I don’t know if the over pa...

I'm not familiar with Richard Garrett’s work, but he may be referring to the fifth and last victim, the Harlesden (5,483 GRT) which initialy tried to escape but was finally sunk at 2308 hours after darkness fell.

Re: Crew indulgences near the end

I suspect the crew men received Pervitin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methamphetamine Yes, most likely. Radio operators aboard Prinz Eugen were administered Pervitin during Rheinübung, and considering the position Bismarck was I suspect it would be the same. Schokakola with its high caffeine cont...
