Re: Fast Battleship League Table

My thanks for this information, which must have taken some time to compile. It does help to indicate where fact fades into supposition, e.g. regarding the number of guns in salvo, lie. Your observation regarding dispersion vs range is basically correct; at short ranges most dispersion is due to vari...

Re: Fast Battleship League Table

To Mr. Simon: You are certainly employing an interesting analysis procedure here, but without -- at least so far as I know -- revealing any data about exactly how some of your input values, e.g. true mean dispersions, were derived. Along similar lines, your computations for range error due to rangef...

Re: Gun precision / dispersion

That's sort of true. Technically the precision of the mean point of impact is independent of the number of shots in the pattern. As pattern size goes up, however, the random statistical 'drift' of the m.p.i. becomes less and less important, so plotting the trajectory of the m.p.i. becomes easier. Wi...

Re: Gun precision / dispersion

As others have pointed out already, small values of dispersion in and of themselves -- which at best, being largely statistical animals, do tend to vary quite significantly from shoot to shoot -- are not in and of themselves very predictive of hitting probability unless they are combined with one's ...

Re: Gun precision / dispersion

The detailed and rather complex equations that deal with dispersion often present results apparently invalidating the oft-employed (but largely intuitive) solutions revolving around the idea that small dispersion, i.e. small pattern size, is always better than large. Especially as ranges increase, t...

Re: Pumping capacity (fire main/damage control) and fire main diagram for the Essex class?

The ship's General Information Book should include most of this information. Copies should be reasonably easy to get from the National Archives, although when it came right down to it each ship in a class varied somewhat due to differences in supplied items, e.g. the company which supplied things li...

Re: Battle of Denmark photo

I take it from your memo that you have three photos that need identification and authentication. Although there is probably enough expertise on this board to accomplish that task, written descriptions are really not enough, i.e. you would probably have to post copies of the photos first. Bill Jurens...

@ Mustang: Thank you very much for your linkdin. That's very cooperative, and I'm sure other members will find the content very useful. As did I. Don't worry about banning. We're all very patient here, and -- now that we know a little more about you -- can more easily assess -- and coherently respon...

Re: How close was the final battle?

@ Mustang: If my records are correct, it appears that you have entered this forum very recently and have, during your period here, presented some observations and conclusions that others are finding, let us say, 'somewhat controversial'. As you are no doubt aware, some have expressed concerns that a...

Re: How close was the final battle?

The predicted terminal conditions for these various guns, at range, was never measured. With the technology then available, it was simply not possible to measure things like the angle of fall and the striking velocity at range because there was no way to get a projectile to pass through any measurin...

Re: How close was the final battle?

I think you have misunderstood. I was not saying that going faster necessarily makes your gunnery more accurate in and of itself, but the ABILITY to go faster -- and to be able to choose an appropriate course because your rudder works -- certainly helps. Sometimes slowing down can help, too. If you ...

Re: How close was the final battle?

I did post a reply some time ago regarding projectile ricochet from water, which seems to have disappeared into cyber-space. I will highly generalize here as the precise situation is very dependent upon the individual circumstance, and largely driven by chaotic processes. In general with typical pro...

I must admit that after spending roughly fifty years studying ballistics, etc., the comments and unconventional and elaborate analytical techniques presented by Mustang to describe projectile trajectories remain absolutely incomprehensible to me. The normal procedures for ballistic analysis of traje...

Re: How close was the final battle?

O.K. It seems to be working now: I would like to re-submit several comments, now rewritten, that I put in a few days ago, regarding the outcome of the final battle. The first concerns discussions revolving around maneuverability and stability. Anyone who has been at sea knows that one can often dram...
