Hi Karl,

A quick google of "chicken marengo" comes up with thousands of references for it, below is one which combines the recipe and the legend.

I wonder how Jellicoe would have fared had Tryon not had his experiments cut short rather dramatically. Young Jellicoe was on board and some of his colleagues (apparently) had a whip round for him, to replace the money he had spent on paint for the ship (I guess that isn't news to anyone who has rea...

There is indeed a Port Erin on the Isle of Man, although I haven't delved into it very deep. I also noted a Wiki reference to Erin as "a romatic name for Ireland used by 19th century poets....", I couldn't follow that up because everytime I open Wiki it crashes my puter!!! So it's either o...

You missed one Karl, although you mentioned the less important event in 1800 :).

The birth of a new dish - chicken marengo, after which the famous battle was named (j/k)

Hi Gary

Off the top of my head isn't Erin a reference to Ireland, from the dim and distant past? Not that that explains it use in any way.

I think RF means the Germans don't seem to have used female names for ships. I am sure he will clarify what he means momentarily.

Indeed so Karl, I can't disagree with you, I was merely pointing out a fact. As for generalship I rate both Wellington and Napoleon but, on the day, Napoleon was certainly not his usual self. His decision to leave Soult in Paris, and to give the cavalry to Ney was a disaster, similarly with giving G...

I don't think we should write off the significance of Verdun from the German perspective. Originally conceived as a battle to "bleed the French army white" it undoubtedly succeeded but, what I think was unforeseen at the time, it also bled the German army white too. Imo neither army was ca...

Whilst I share your sentiments about the battle Karl I do have to put the record straight on one thing. British troops made up less than half of Wellington's army, and that doesn't include the Prussians who made sure of the result. At that time Britain still had a small, professional army (of which ...

I have two problems with the mess that is Iraq today. Firstly Saddam was not a terrorist in the global sense. He might not have been very nice to some of his own people but then neither is Mugabe, and what are the US doing there? He certainly kept his people under control, which isn't the case today...

I think you mean the Santa Fe which, if I remember correctly was taken out by a hand held missile launch system (something like Milan I think).

Hi RF I didn't mean to imply that the British did the deed, rather that they allowed it to happen - that was the impression given by the programme. The Captain was supposed to take the blame but, apparently, the man in charge of the enquiry refused to carry out that part of his instructions. Sorry i...

I watched it and was left feeling somewhat disappointed, and perplexed. It seemed very weighted against the Admiralty, and I wonder just how much of that angle is true. Admittedly my reading of the campaign against commerce is sketchy, but I have never read anything in the military side of things th...

Re Karl's suggestion that Germany might have had 50+ extra operational U-boats, and that this might have made a difference: My stock answer to this is that Britain would not have stood idly by and watched this growing threat without responding. But I have been wondering if a British response was lik...
