Re: May 10

Since the 1870 von Moltke's (the elder) action in the Franco-Prussian war the May 10th 1940's one was (and it still is) the most daring and perfect military invasion ever performed up to date (even more than Desert Storm in the means that the 1991 operation failed to finish Saddam and a new operati...

Re: German tanks

Now I will agree in the case of the Tiger 1 vs Pershing the numbers are going to be so low that they will be statistically of little import. As for the Firefly's vs Tigers that one is likely to be very confounded as in many cases it will not be clear what killed Firefly's. Why would it be more conf...

Re: How would you improve the Royal Navy

Gentlemen, Once again thanks for your replies, perhaps I mistook the meaning of 'Improve' as when I suggested 3X15" in four turrets I was assuming that the Washington Treaty did not apply and that weight and size was not a concern. OK, then 3x18" in four turrets on 100,000 tons. :D WOW! T...

Re: How would you improve the Royal Navy

Given the general conservatism of RN WWII designs, going for quadruple turrets in the KGVs seems odd. But the fact that quadruple turrets were a new and untested idea, at least for the RN, would not have been obvious to politicians. I suppose the sequence was, first 14 in guns (political decision),...

Re: How would you improve the Royal Navy

Well, sure. The French on Richelieu. Different countries measure weight differently though and I think it might be hard for us to figure out the difference.

Thanks for that info; I didn't know that!

Re: German tanks

It would be interesting to know the kill ratio of Tiger I vs Sherman Firefly.

Or Tiger I vs Pershing.

Re: Royal Wedding and ladies hats

I watched part of it and my wife taped it and has watched all of it since. It was a lot of fun, and they are a beautiful couple. I wish them all the luck in the world in their marriage, which must involve a lot of stress as well as happiness.

And yes, a few of the hats were a bit over the top.

Re: Effect of bombs

The problem with that of course is that it was virtually impossible to hit a magazine space on a modern battleship with an AP bomb. In fact, I'm unable to recall that ever happening against a maneuvering battleship. ..... There is little question that the likelihood of scoring a hit upon a maneuver...

Re: Who fires first wins ?????

The Germans thought they might be German battleships? Good grief.

I was primarily referring to night actions in the Pacific, where one side would sometimes strike first with torpedoes and then gunfire at close range. Two prominent examples are Savo Island and Surigao Strait, but there are others.

Yes, but there was also the destroyer who's bow was blown off by a 15" hit in the movie.

Re: Who fires first wins ?????

In naval combat it's often the case that the side firing first achieved tactical surprise and has a substantial advantage because of that.
